There are so many streamable albums for 2011 that I don't even know what to begin with. LOL I was thinking to leave it for late autumn, when people start evaluating their year in music, but upon request I could start earlier. :P

I'll come back with the promised streaming a bit later.

Not true. I've been reading Prog Archives for years, and get a LOT of great input from reviewers here. And there are just as many high reviews for these "conservative" titles as there are for the more avant-garde stuff. I notice that Neal Morse's new album is currently number 3 on the "Top Prog Rock Music Albums List."

You are aware that list is for 2011 albums only, right?  The top 100 for all years is here.  Of the top 100, only ? makes it, but barely, at #88.

Thanks for sharing your list. Not one that I would necessarily agree with, but that's the nature of life here.

However, how on earth did Coldplay get in there??Confused

Top 20 Prog Rock Albums from 2000-2009 according to Prog Archives. I'm sorry, but there's too much Tech-extreme metal on that list, and just about everything Ive heard from that genre is just not prog... And I dont know how representative this list is; Ive never seen most of these albums talked about much in the 6 years Ive been on this site Confused

I've actually seen most of those albums talked about a lot, and probably 8 of them would be on my list too.

Yes, of course I know that this is the 2011 list. I'm merely proving the point that the people who rate music at Prog Archives are not necessarily all against the kind of prog that I enjoy myself. So the statement, "a very predictable list that appeals to the majority of the more conservative prog fans, but wont find too many fans on this site" is bogus. Ouch

And for the record, I own every album in the top 10 albums of "all years" listed, and 31 of the top 50! Wink

To quote myself from my post:
Okay, I know that Coldplay are not a Progressive Rock band. But they represent the same kind of mentality toward their music that a good Prog band has: lush atmosphere, a theme that unites the album into a cohesive whole, and experimental explorations of melodies beyond the standard music structure of pop music. How the album opens with an instrumental (“Life in Technicolor”) that blends into an atmospheric piece (“Cemeteries of London”) tells you this is no ordinary pop album. “42,” “Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love,” and “Death and All His Friends” are examples of Proggy song composition – a willingness to switch gears midsong to create a more powerful experience. There are a number of great-selling bands that edge toward prog: the aforementioned Muse and Radiohead are examples, along with Metallica and Mastodon in the Metal genre.

Well, I dont consider that genre prog, so I dont go on related threads. But even so, even other genres I dont listen to, I usually see stuff about them throughout the site or forums. Whatever, I just don't agree with the Tech-genre being a "prog genre"/but I'm not saying it's bad.

Here is my list anyway. Took a little while to figure out the positions.

20. Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient
19. Planet X - Moonbabies
18. Camel - A Nod and A Wink
17. Spock's Beard - V
16. Riverside - Anno Domani High Definition
15. Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon
14. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
13. Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
12. The Flower Kings - Unfold the Future
11. Beardfish - Sleeping In Traffic: Part Two
10. Karmakanic - Who's The Boss In The Factory?
09. Riverside - Second Life Syndrome
08. Neal Morse - ?
07. Opeth - Ghost Reveries
06. Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up
05. Transatlantic - The Whirlwind
04. Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
03. Hiromi - Time Control
02. King Crimson - The Power To Believe
01. The Mars Volta - Deloused In The Comatorium

What to need to hear is the debut EP (I added the videos to their PA page) and the concert recordings, then, if you want. the interview.

Awesome, thanks

What to need to hear is the debut EP (I added the videos to their PA page) and the concert recordings, then, if you want. the interview.

I watched about the first 15 minutes of it, really interesting and the music clips sounded awesome.  That timpani drumkit was intense!

Listening to the EP videos right now

Well, I dont consider that genre prog, so I dont go on related threads. But even so, even other genres I dont listen to, I usually see stuff about them throughout the site or forums. Whatever, I just don't agree with the Tech-genre being a "prog genre"/but I'm not saying it's bad.

Uh, what does that have to do with anything? :/

Because I listed the top 20 albums of the 2000s and the list mostly included Tech-extreme bands. I was responding to Triceratopsoil's post.

2002-2011 should be included if we're to produce our own list, no?
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

It's not "mostly" tech/extreme bands, only 5 of them.  Besides, there is no way Opeth is anything but progressive; I'm not familiar with most of the other tech/extreme bands there.  Enslaved might be debatable but I consider what they do progressive.  It's not like the list is a bunch of Necrophagist and Arsis albums.

edit: I don't go in the extreme metal threads either

Oh, OK, since you didn't quote anything it looked like you're addressing the posts above (which were our off-topic conversation about DorDeDuh).

Is Opeth still in that category? I thought they had been moved. If you saw my list of Top 20 prog albums 2000-2009, you would see Opeth made my top 10
