Rest assured, that was not my intention. I don't need any more "pageviews" (why on earth would I care about that?). I simply thought I'd share.
I didn't realize this was such a contentious forum.

Henry is pissiness incarnate.  At least you didn't meet Walter...Ermm

Any one of us could put a Top 20 list together and 9 out of 10 members here are going to say it's a lousy list.

I hope you stick around.  As Pat says, it's why we are here (because we're here).

I'm going to make my own rules and do a top 10 instead (in no order):

Choirs of the Eye - Kayo Dot
By- - Bygones
De-Loused in the Comatorium - The Mars Volta
Frances the Mute - TMV
Fits - White Denim
Five Peace Band - John McLaughlin and Chick Corea
And the Glass Handed Kites - Mew
Widow City - The Fiery Furnaces
The Special Garage Concerts - Cardiacs
Astrological Straits - Zach Hill and Peer Pressure

Echylon's Mei isn't going to make my list because I'm just now taking a first listen. Pretty cool stuff. Don't love the vocals by any means, but I'm digging the arrangements so far. These guys should be instrumental! Having put TMV on the list twice, I feel like I should also note that their latest release Octahedron contains a whopping 2 decent songs on it. So dissapointing. I'm growing very far from the TMV fan that I was 3 years ago. Bixler's voice is just starting to get unbearable. Then again, I'm really picky about vocals. Anybody else feel the same?

I'm sorry, but Muse and Coldplay?LOL

Henry is trying his best to fill some shoes left by Walter......hopefully he fails miserably...I really like post 1987 music LOL

Anyhow, don't get too wound up in peoples posts here.........Remember you are on a forum which 99.987645632% of the time is discussing what you think is good or bad....prog or not prog.....Music is art and everybody has an opinion.

That's the beauty of PA.

I was just expressing my annoyance at clicking a thread and then having to click somewhere else to get to the actual content. I wasn't trying to scare you off the site or anything.

I'm not filling anyone's shoes :| And certainly not the shoes of a half-assed troll who only had one gimmick, even if it was a very effective one since PA couldn't learn to ignore him.

Actually, I do a better Walter impression than Henry, since I would be incapable of compiling such a list. The only post 1989 prog band I listen to is SGM.

Ok I agree with you there, and you gotta give props to a guy who stuck to his guns Walter did.......although I actually liked Walter and tried to joke with him normally.
I actually thought it was pretty funny.....Henry your posts at least have substance.

And I don't consider In Absentia a prog album at all.

Perhaps. I would struggle to compile a list of favourite prog albums of the last decade because most of mine like Kate Bush 'Aerial' and Tangerine Dream 'Purgatorio' are not prog so if you take out Porcupine Tree as well then I'm really stuck.

The list as presented though is far too narrow a selection of artists. Was always going to get ripped to peices.

Honestly, a very predictable list that appeals to the majority of the more conservative prog fans, but wont find too many fans on this site.

Just as an example of how different peoples lists can be heres mine:

  1. Pain of Salvation- The Perfect Element
  2. Kayo Dot- Choirs of the Eye
  3. maudlin of the Well- Leaving Your Body Map
  4. Opeth- Blackwater Park
  5. maudlin of the Well- Part the Second
  6. The Pax Cecilia- Blessed are the Bonds
  7. Between the Buried and Me- The Great Misdirect
  8. White Willow- Storm Season
  9. Burst- Lazarus Bird
  10. Kayo Dot- Blue Lambency Downward
  11. Madder Mortem- Deadlands
  12. Virgin Black- Requiem Mezzo Forte
  13. Mastodon- Crack the Skye
  14. Pain of Salvation- 12:5
  15. Indukti- SUSAR
  16. In the Woods...- Liveatthecaledonianhall
  17. Hiromi- Spiral
  18. Riverside- Anno Dommine High Definition
  19. Deathspell Omega- Fas--Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum
  20. The Mars Volta- De-Loused in the Comatorium

The list covers a very narrow subset of prog. But I guess it is fairly fair in what it does cover.

Although I have never understood the appeal of Neal Morse's work in the slightest.

Some interesting choices.

Looking at your list, you might enjoy Moon Safari's Blomljud, which is one of my favorite new prog / retro prog / whatever you want to call it. Doomsday Afternoon may well be the best of that ilk but that's already been mentioned many times.

I personally like Fear of a Blank Planet the best of recent PT, but that's just taste.

I Maudlin of the Well's Part the Second should be considered for such a list.

And I'll be nice and not mention any metal because that will take us somewhere else completely.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Thanks. It's Negura Bunget's OM. Do you know it? Judging by your reviews for Agalloch and Fen, you might like it, or not. LOL

I've sampled it a few times. It's really in my realm so I need to get it and give it a few listens. I'm pretty finicky with my taste for harsh vocals. Some work just fine for me, some I hate, some have to grow on me.

Some jazzy influences?

I know what you mean. I think the entire album is on YouTube and if you want I can find and assemble the samples for you in the right order for a proper stream (unless you've done that already).

I don't know about the jazz influences but it's possible. The Dordeduh debut (the band that now contains the songwriters from OM) will have some declared jazz influences (mainly in the percussives, apparently). So I wouldn't say no, but the traditional is much more prominent in OM.

I'll check out the youtube. I appreciate the offer. I've gotten some great albums from previous youtube samplings you've done. Are we due for a 2011 thread yet?
