OK, here's your challenge -
You have to introduce someone to progressive rock; which track do you choose?
I'm not looking for a track to encapsulate the 'spirit' of prog, or to sum up what progressive rock means - we've done that (many times) before - what I'm looking for here is a track which will not automatically alienate a new listener, but make his or her ears prick up, and maybe prompt further exploration.
And no, I've not got an example yet - hell, I've only just thought of this idea - don't expect me to see it through to the end.....

No Yes - It took me a year or two to get into Yes and I was already into prog, not ELP or Camel - Yes I'll stick with Genesis - Maybe Stagnation ?
This is VERY HARD !

No Yes? My first thought was something off Fragile, like Heart of the Sunrise- that's a killer opening riff to hook any rockers, and plenty of variety to spice it up. "And You and I" is a good intro as well; easy on the ears but lots of depth.
I guess it would depend on what the 'initiate' already listens to...if they're mellower by nature, some classic Floyd (or specific ELP songs) would work fine. If they're into acoustic folk stuff then "Thick as a Brick" couldn't hurt. If they listen to electronic stuff then some Vangelis or TD might do the trick. And of course, if they're into metal then obviously Dream Theater (or Opeth for the harder types, or Tool for the numetal connection).
Wow, one song to vanguard a genre...I don't know if it can be done.

Roundabout. The acoustic guitar intro is an instant attention grabber and is very pleasant indeed, as is the rest of the song. It is not too much of a 'shock' for those not accustomed to Prog, and the lyrics are imaginative.

I'd play them some Genesis to start with. Probably 'Dance on a Volcano' and 'Down and out' from the Collins era, and 'Can utility and the coastliners' from Gabriel era.

If they didn't like any of that I would strap them to a chair and make them sit through VDGG 'Still Life' on repeat. Until they apologised for having no taste

How about Supper's Ready? It's got a little bit of everything including some cracking tunes and might even get 'em tapping their toes in 9/8 style! The one that worked for me as a newcomer was side 1 of Hemispheres.

It really depends more on what you know about the person you're going to introduce it to. My wife plays guitar, so I started with "In your Eyes," the Jeffery Gaines version and then the Peter Gabriel version. Once she feels the melody, she's hooked. Distance to the Sun from Spock's Beard is another she grasped quickly, as well as some IZZ. I can get away with some Porcupine Tree or Pineapple Thief. 
I played "Knots" from Gentle Giant and she looked as though I told her I fell in love with someone elese and I was leaving. She laughed her arse off! Once I helped her back to her feet she demand I remove the disc for the player before the neighbors heard and called the Mental Health professionals.

I have't heard any "Gentle Giant"...Another added to the list of bands I should have heard !
I played "Dig them Mushrooms" to my youngest and HE LIKED IT! My eldest son (14) says all my music is the saddest he's ever heard....But prog has no street cred, whereas M&M has (apparently)!
There you go - I have tried lots of music on my wife, but she only likes very late Genesis and thats coz it's pop !

Pink Floyd, reckon they're the most accessible prog there is, generally there are no mad tempos, no mad lyrics, no mad sonic chaos, no mad helium-voiced singer (tho I like all those things  )
I'd go for Shine On You Crazy Diamond
or Side one of Dark Side, they should do the trick....

probably Camel - Music Inspired by the Snow Goose.
Melodic, accesible and progressive. Never ceases to inspire me. Still cant get my wife to like it though.
Swnton MCR (ManChesteR?).have the same problems as you bud. The kids think I'm sad.

i would say, in general, it depends mostly on what the person listens to. but i think maybe time by pink floyd would be a good track in itself.
