All the street cred Yes has gathered amongst the proggers won't make up for such a bad album.

But of course, there's always those hardcore fans that will review every Yes record as 5 stars here.

Don't worry guys: Big Big Train and Karmakanic will make 2011 a year to remember.

Also, if I were you lot, I'd give Fly From Here a bit more time to sink in. It's the first Yes record we've had in a freakin' decade after all.

I wasn't much of a Drama fan anyway, will FFH make 2011 a success, or just "meh"?

I'm very much enjoying the album on a first listen, but it is oddly difficult to describe outside of saying it sounds like a somewhat lighter Drama.  The vocal melodies are some of the most memorable Yes have done for quite a long time, but the instrumentation has taken more of a back seat.

Howe and Squire certainly seem less present in the Fly From Here suite in favour of the keys, except for the proggy Bumpy Ride section, but they're a lot more prominent on the remaining tracks (especially the last one), for what it's worth.  And there's some right cheese thanks to Squire's Ladder-esque ballad The Man You Always Wanted Me To Be.  The Ladder meets Drama is probably the nearest album to album pinpoint for the sound of the record.

I can't say the album is a disappointment - I am really enjoying it, but it's not exactly the fantastic return to the 70s classic that they promised.  But then, what band doesn't say that before every single bloody album is released?  It hasn't won over 2011 for me yet, anyway.

Credo - Against Reason
Pendragon - Passion
Comedy of Errors - Disobey

All of the above released this year have entered my top 100.

Well - Queensryche didn't improve things so that kind of leaves Dream Theater to rescue my 2011 hopes. I haven't hated the Symphony X or Queensryche new offerings although, to me, they're nothing to make me hail "Yay 2011"
I have the new Yes album as well and I'm not decided about it yet - on first listenings I kind of like the album so far although like many fans do I do miss Anderson within the group.

This has been a good year for cheesy comfort food dad-prog-rock but there hasn't been much challenging or genuinely progressive stuff that I've come across. Well there is that new Unexpect which is probably not exactly the sort of uber-cornball music that Neal Morse and the like are making, but I didn't really enjoy In A Flesh Aquarium so I'm hesitant to hop on board. I'm sticking with Tuneyards.

Generally a year of highly anticipated follow-ups, many of which weren't even remotely interesting. It's a fine year, but only if you try new things or discover something unexpected. To this point, I can say 2010 was more satisfying, although I made up my mind quite late (around winter) on what new music I really enjoy.

2011 prog is borderline nonexistent in my year's provisional top.

2011 is a huge disappointment only because the B&B album hasn't surfaced yet.

There is, however, the possibility of a new Anglagard record coming out in the next few months (they're being awfully tight-lipped about it... Maybe they're planning on making it a surprise release in December and sweeping the Top of 2011 polls... I tell ya, all some artists care about is their PA ranking LOL).

Is there any (good) new fusion on the horizon?

This year hasn't been amazing so far. I've only bought two albums made this year so far: The King of Limbs by Radiohead, and Welcome to My DNA by Blackfield. Both are good. But there is still plenty to come this year. New Dream Theater, new Opeth, new Steven Wilson solo album, etc.
Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

yeah, about the best stuff I've found in the last year were all those songs in that
YouTube yeye neighborhood (German, French and Dutch)...excellent musicianship,
great melodies, that PROGresses me a bunch and a great way to learn a few
European languages.

Just noticed this post. Yes, quirky french pop and Ye-ye girls rule! Clothilde's got a flawless discography (2 Epees, 8 great songs).

Scroll down to the middle and check out my Ye-ye post here.

Plenty of good post-rock has surfaced this year, namely Mogwai and This Will Destroy You.

Thanks for the Everything Everything reference.  Great catchy difficult music is still being made, but it seems
like there are a lot of prog enthusiasts who are more or just as interested in other genres to find it.  Mew
made at least one great song:

http://youtu.be/kz0aVur1F2A

but they didn't really prog that much else as far as I've heard.  But that one song, Introducing
Palace Players is the proggiest thing I've heard that has a gorgeous melody and gives me
an uplifted feeling.

Good post certainly and I have to agree with this (we old farts are starting to suspect modern Prog taxis are charging us for two laps round the same block)

Actually, this year is anything but disappointing. Beardfish disappointed me a little, but as I listened them more and more, it surprised me. Somehow.

Wait until you hear this, soon to be added to Crossover band:

FRANCK CARDUCCI

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"
