The Moody Blues were the band that got me into music, and I was like 11 at the time. If that doesn't count then I found ELP at 14 when perusing iTunes. I found out that they were called "progressive rock" so I looked up more of the stuff and got way into it. I was never greatly into metal of any kind.

I might've been a bit into Floyd at the same time but they didn't make me go "what the hell is this stuff" like ELP did.

35 here...

Grew up a metalhead...

Discovered Dream Theater at 16 when Pull Me Under broke...

That's when I began to truly open up and get away from listening to strictly metal...

I still love metal to this day...

If it's done well...

Can't stand the new deathcore trend though...

I was also a child of the 80s so having knowledge of the 80s material from bands such as Yes, Rush, and Genesis later fueled my interest in their earlier work...

I'm 14, and I've been got into prog by Pink Floyd around 13. I've tried to listen to some Dream Theater and stuff, but I don't like it so much.
For now i keep listening to Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Jethro, Area, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Elio e le Storie Tese, etc.

I'm 17. I actually have to say that metal genres interest me the least of all. I do like some metal, but I usually don't plan on finding new metal bands. I do find that metal heads are intensely passionate about their music (not that there are really any genres who's fans aren't) but I've come to realize this more when I became friends with someone who's really into metal. It's not all about the heaviness and the widdly widdly weeee solos.

IMHO I think Metal is the current front runner for Prog (and has been for a number of years).  So it's natural for kids to start there.  I did kinda but I was also playing stand up bass in Jazz ensemble in high school and was playing guitar and/or bass in a few Post Rock, Math Rock, and Fusion bands in college while going for a music theory and composition degree.  So I was in effect paying attention to more than just metal.  However it was bands like BTBAM, Meshuggah, Death, Converge, Emperor, Into the Moat, Ion Dissonance, Spiral Architect, Spastic Ink, At the Gates, SYL, etc that lead me to listen to King Crimson.  Which in effect changed my whole view on music forever.

I'm 14 and really like all types of prog music. It started a few years ago for me with the classics and big name prog bands and really since then (using this amazing resource) I've explored more and more types of prog. I'm a HUGE Zappa fan and I love avant-garde music, fusion, etc. Ironically, one of the few types of prog I have not been able to get into yet is prog metalSmile

I just wanted to make you realise that it's certain that there's not alot of ''only prog metal fan here''. We're on a progressive rock website so it's certain that the majority here likes a lot of different styles of prog. It's just that, still today, when I tell another young guy like me that I like progressive rock his first think is Dream Theater wich is a really nice band but it's not the first band I'd associate to progressive rock. Sometimes it's Rush (wich isn't metal but that is still loved by a lot of metalhead I guess) but the only thing they know about Rush is the album ''Moving Pictures'' wich really isn't my favorite.

I'm 16, and I'm not particularly fond of prog metal (there are exceptions, though). I began listening to prog when I was 8 or 9, IIRC. My dad had ATTWT in a LP. I began listening to Follow You, Follow Me, and it was a matter of time until I ended up misplacing the needle and listening to The Lady Lies. I still think Genesis is the best band ever.

I haven't been listening Genesis in the last few days (well, at least not as often as I used to), 'cause I recently discovered PFM, Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings. Amazing bands!

I am 15 and although I like a lot of prog-metal like most of the seventies rock and my taste for progressive rock expands to many other areas - just as not all "old Progger" enjoysYes, Genesis, etc.. It is an unfortunate stereotype.
