Bandcamp Recommendations

If you haven't seen them before, Bandcamp are a website that will hopefully soon replace MySpace - they allow artists to stream their albums, put their albums up for download in a myriad of formats, and sell their CDs. Furthermore, usually purchases of a CD on a Bandcamp webpage come with an immediate free mp3 download - a feature that I think will grow more important as time passes.

This thread is for users to recommend bands that they have found who have Bandcamp webpages. I will start:

Giraffes/giraffes - http://giraffesgiraffes.bandcamp.com/ - I really enjoy these guys, admittedly post/math rock is not my strong point so if they're great or subpar in the genre I can't say, but they come across as great music to me.

Sampling a couple of their tracks now, I'm enjoying this one . Looks like they only have their album available for digital download though.

 

I think I'm ready to see some separation in where people post their music ... youtube/myspace and all those is a hassle, because there is so much crap amidst everything else that it makes it more difficult all around.

 

One suggestion/idea would be to help take a "ProgArchives" (for example -- since they are more established and have a bigger history than most) and combine it with the ability/facility for these bands to showcase their music and not have to go to youtube-faceless!

 

The problem is a type of collusion and favoritism of course, but I doubt that a board with this much history would have that ... some reviewers might not be as gaga on it as others ... but in the end, it would help a lot of artists gain a better link to folks that might actually appreciate their music ... with the side effect that others won't because it is listed in a "prog" place -- but all in all, it would help locate music a lot better than most places do.

 

The other side effect is that we would kill Dream Theater with all the comments!

 

There are a lot of sites out there for musicians, and the problem is the same with them ... divisions that do not clarify anything about the music ... but in my book, the majority of the music I have found in those places is not very good or worthy of the attention that we give here to some bands.

 

And that is only a comment to get the ire of musicians to get better and stop copying anyone or anything else out there!

A few I ran across just today:

Vialka - La Poursuite de l'Excellence These guys are here under RIO/Avant, I shared this album with a few other members but they didn't like the vocals. Vocals didn't bother me, I actually liked this one a fair bit.

Perhaps Contraption - Sludge and Tripe Another RIO/Avant band on PA

54-40 - Lost In The City Gotcha! These guys are pop/rock but pretty good.
