I've been...uhm... torrenting for nearly seven years over four or five different Providers in five different homes in two different states, being as bold as to uhm... torrent films as soon as they are released via screener or dvd rip, The newest! Any song, game, film, book, piece of software from Adobe Photoshop Elements to Microsoft Office, from Isohunt to Thepiratebay, to direct dl via Warez, and I've never been caught, sent a cease and desist letter, taken up for lawsuit, or penalized in any way.

I'm just very unlucky. My brother is a DJ and torrents tens of gigabytes of music a month. It scares me, because my house has been warned for legal action twice by two different parties, one of which is NBC.

I'm staying as far away from that sh*t as possible.

Damn, that sucks. If I had to give up bittorrent I'd contemplate committing suicide.

I had no idea they were able to do so much now. Anyways I literally don't even have a torrent client installed on my computer and never have on this one. Never found any big reason for it. Especially nowadays with grooveshark, youtube, bandcamp, etc. there's an abundance of music to stream before you buy so the old "try before you buy" thing isn't even relevant.

Using Grooveshark, Youtube, bandcamp, and other similar programs is still technically "try before you buy". It's just that the record industry likes one method and frowns on the other.

That being said, I'm not advocating anything here, but I think if you do like an artist, you should support them by buying CDs, going to see them on tour, buy merch, etc. if you want them to keep making music.

It scared me sh*tless. It was sad when I officially stopped the second time (first time I started a few weeks after the ordeal), but then I found youtube-mp3, and the abundance of full albums on youtube ripe for the download. Then I've used mediafire more than I should. I still download quite a bit, but for some reason I like the feeling of buying music. It's like I'm somehow contributing to the music industry, in a good way Shocked

I never cared for contributing. Wouldn't true artists keep making music and creating even at the prospect of not making money?

I don't believe that, but I don't have a moral fiber either way. If Toby Driver personally comes to my house and treats my family to a nice (not overblown - it'll be respectful) dinner, I'll go ahead and hop on Amazon and order a copy of Choirs of the Eye on CD.

According to the Los Angeles Times, The Pirate Bay is "one of the world's largest facilitators of illegal downloading" and "the most visible member of a burgeoning international anti-copyright or pro-piracy movement"

So I've reviewed nearly 20 albums today: the first four Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, Anathema, Marillion, and Tiamat albums. My two favorites? Script for a Jester's Tear and De-Loused in the Comatorium.
