Topic: any Toto fans? Posted: June 02 2011 at 22:57 |
hahahah yes the masters of AOR indeed. but in some of their best musical moments they had slight glimpses of prog? given they were excellent musicians who did also appreciate prog music.
The Hydra album is pretty proggy esp the 8min title track. Even 'Africa' w its ethnic vibes and synths can bring to mind a little Tortoise!!!

I love their first album especially, and the work some of the members did on Triumvirat's 1980 album Russian Roulette

I used to like their music, but it has changed due to a traumatic experience. Some yeas ago I was travelling the the mountains in a car of the company, they usually gave us old cars with a radio, but this time they gave me a Volvo S70, that had a very good stereo and I had no CD's.
So I stopped in the market (on the route) and bought whatever I could find, they had three compilations, one by Rolling Stones, another by Eagles and one by Toto.
The first two were damaged (Only could listen a couple of tracks) so all the trip (six hours to my destination and six hours back) was condemned to listen TOTO's best hits.
After such a long time listening the same 20 tracks, I got tired of Toto, never could listen them again.
Iván
BTW: Even when I liked them, could never find a Prog connection..

the album I enjoy to listen to most of the times is Isolation, i also like Turn Back (the second half is neo progish, and also the songs seague into eachother like a concept album)

I've just got into Toto myself, after asking for recommendations from this site. So far I have bought:
1. Toto
2. IV
3. The Seventh One
4. Kingdom of Desire
5. Mindfields
6. Livefields
7. Falling in Between
I also got the Steve Lukather solo album Candyman.
I plan to get Isolation and Turn Back next.
Although highly polished AOR, the musicianship is staggeringly good. Clearly in the same vein as Boston, Journey and REO Speedwagon, but superior I think to all of these bands.

pssst get Hydra and Tambu also, Farenheit is interesting becouse of the interesting fact that Miles Davis plays trumpet on the last track (if you are interested in that)

I think the best thing with Toto overall is the stunning vocal harmonies, the background singign is totaly staggering and in perfect synch and pitch,
also the bass grooves are infectious
