This has peaked my interest. 3 of the biggest prog metal bands coming out with albums around the same time this year!

The band held a listening party for journalists on Wednesday. The word is the album has no growls, no death metal, and is about 56 minutes in length.

I still am not sure how to feel about the album cover.
I love it, but the faces of the band members on it is kind of wtf.
Looks like a 70's prog rock album cover! Which may not be too surprising actually.

I am cautiously looking forward to it. I was hoping they'd mix it up and sounds like they are. Now just hoping it will be good different and not sh*tty different!

I thought it was an awesome cover until I saw it close up. Replace the band's faces with more skulls and it's epic.

But it's like a scene in a movie, you can't take even the most hardcore dramatic scene seriously if it ends with a comedic moment. It turns the whole scene comedic. Opeth, you have turned your whole album comedic.

That hasn't been ruled out yet. I'm sure there's some sick riffs on the album

You don't think the Deliverance cover is funny? with Mikael standing in view of the mirror in the backround, trying to look evil LOL

It's still pretty metal. Plus you'd have to know beforehand that it was him. You don't look at it and go - Oh, that's Mikael.

I think that Heritage will have growl and sick riffs in it because I remember an interview that Mikeal said that he would never make another album like Damnation ( no growl no metal riffs) so it will be surely be a violent record like the other one

Excellent!
I would LOVE a 70's feeling album but with some heaviness still, and jazzfolkbluesfunk mixed in!

I still lol at how everyone heard "no death metal" and is assuming it's going to be Kansas now.
That being said, a prog rock album would be cool but it can't be a 70's clone either

You evidently have not heard the middle section of "Icarus II."  Wink

So basically it's not Opeth anymore...

This is all encouraging. Watershed was rather pathetic, actually. I'm wary of metal-blues turns (thank you, Pain of Salvation for that) but still, I'm hopeful Opeth will find soul, in a way.

I still think there will be metal riffs (how many? I dont know) so it wont be like Damnation, but I also believe this will be Opeth's most varied album. I love when bands mix it up.

That is exactly what I think.
Agreed, much as I love Opeth they were wearing a bit thin after 8 albums of more or less the same style, and Watershed was really pretty mediocre but some great parts pulled it up.

You wanna place money on that? Wink

I like Kansas, and Camel, and Genesis. That's just it....if I want to listen to them I will, don't need Opeth to pretty much remake their stuff.

A guy on another message board who was at that pre-listen said it still has plenty of really heavy parts, despite the lack of death metal. No Damnation this one.
