''It will be our 10th album/observation. I dig it; we all do. In fact, it feels like I've been building up to write for and participate on an album like this since I was 19.
It's quite intense at times in some 'old' murky way, and quite beautiful and stark at times, if I may say so myself. It's obvious I'm going to say nice things about it since I wrote, basically, the whole piece, but I guess it will raise a few eyebrows and it certainly is an acquired taste. think you'll need a slightly deeper understanding of our music as a whole to be able to appreciate this record. I've realized my influences for this album are so diverse that I can't really say what it sounds like. If I can compare it to any other band, it would have to be OPETH, but it's different from the stuff we've done before. I've listened a lot to Alice Cooper for the last year, yet I can't say it sounds like No More Mr. Nice Guy. I hope you'll like it once you hear it. ''-Mikeal about the new album I've always trusted Mikeal about everything he has done so I'm quite confident about that album and it will surely sounds like an amazing Opeth album |

Oh my...did a search...I think it's real.
There's a site I like that basically makes fun of bad sci-fi covers and this would have a great place.
Let's see, there's a burning modern, high-rise steel city with flames off the top of a 70's Trans-Am. A dying red sun. A mass of red spaghetti noodles surrounding a gesticulating two headed imp. A knobby old tree trunk with a blooming fruit tree stuck on top of it. But instead of apples, there are badly photoshopped heads of the band including one who's face appears to be a tire swing suspended by his head. But at least keeping true to theme, there is a line of bored looking people plucking the strange fruit from the tree. But wait, some of the people are mysteriously half-sized, and one is holding a picket sign, protesting...what? Oh and don't forget the skulls, which are about 10 times as big as the head of the people plucking the fruit but I suppose proportional to the band faces.
Clearly, this relates directly to the title "Heritage." Edited by Negoba - June 01 2011 at 13:45 |

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I definately dig the cover. I've not bought any Opeth as of yet (with the exception of "Damnation" ... excellent album!), but I might get this just because the cover art is so different from their typical style. Almost reminds me of a cross between the cover of "In Search of the Lost Chord" and the gatefold of "Something Magic" by Procol Harum.

I think It's great, but I did not expect that. Mind you, anything that annoys Kerrang ect is fine by me. I think if the rest of the albums follows the trends I am seeing so far, it will be great. Anyway, Opeth albums are always great.

This is definitely their most interesting album cover. I do agree that the heads are a bit offsetting and unnerving but I like the overall vintage quality of it and I suspect it will suit the themes in the songs well. BTW, just a theory here: Maybe the tree represents the Tree of Knowledge from Genesis and the skulls belong to people who picked the apple and their souls were sucked down to hell? And maybe the line of people represents man's innate curiosity since everyone wants to pick an apple? Anyways, it looks like we might be seeing some religious themes on here. As far as the band-member heads, I think that's just a joke. Sorry for the rant!

That's not Heritage but Sacrilege I still think it's a joke though, I don't think those nice Swedish guys would use the 'harsh' symbolic imagery of Per's head falling off the tree. Edited by Bonnek - June 01 2011 at 17:22 |

Indeed. Also, Wilberg could be flying instead of falling. . . . It depends on de context. |

It's a joke in the sense that it's the band's joke (not that someone on the internet made this all up).

I see it as a sort of mix with Aasgardian mythology and Judean mythology, the three is probably an image on Ygdrasill (the three of life, in norse mythology), but it can also be the three of wisdom in the garden of eden, the crowd is the Exodysian motife, and the roots of the tree of life goes all the way down to Neifelheim and hel, (the land of fire and Hels realm the sculls is the past the heads in the three is the beginning, the burning city is probably Babylon or image of war and destruction and the sun on the other side is a image of fire and life..

Wow, use of colour. Actually makes me more interested in the album (which I'm already pretty keen for) but not sure about the heads. (Deep Purple fans, of course )Seems a little cheesy, but it's not going to stop me buying it so it's all good in the end.

Hmmm, lose the faces and then we'll talk. Although my interest has definitely peaked as to how this will sound. Looks like Mike's finally ready to take his love for prog and folk to the next level, which is good because things got stale with the band a long time ago. Still, I wish he would have dropped the two newer guys along with Per before this album...
