Loved "Watershed", but I think "Deliverance", is their magnum opus! Maybe Heritage can top it off, can't wait to find out! Tongue

I am excited mainly because I really liked certain elements of Watershed, but though that the metal elements on that album were among their weakest. The Lotus Eater and Heir Apparent are decent tracks (the two most metal tracks on the album), but I found them to be bland in comparison with the excellent album closers Hessian Peel and Hex Omega for instance (which I would consider to be more prog and less metal).  All in all it seemed to me that with Watershed they were really trying to take a different tack, and it was sometimes very successful, and other times quite meh. So it will be interesting to see the direction they take.

But then again I would say that Still Life, Blackwater Park and Morningrise are their top albums, and Deliverance is probably their worst. So I think I may have a distinct perspective on this issue.

Did Per write the key arrangements on Ghost Reveries? I really like the work on that album. If he was the one writing it, I'm very sad to see him go.

I'm not particularly excited about this after Watershed.

OPETH ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DETAILS

Posted on May 26, 2011

OPETH, one of the most revered and respected bands in metal, release ‘Heritage’, their third album for Roadrunner on September 19th. The first video and single will be for the track 'The Devil’s Orchard'. ‘Heritage’ follows up 2008’s ‘Watershed’ and 2005’s ‘Ghost Reveries’, each of which brought the forward-thinking, genre-bending band some of the best reviews of their career.

Opeth frontman and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt weighed in on ‘Heritage’, saying, "It will be our 10th album/observation. I dig it; we all do. In fact, it feels like I've been building up to write for, and participate on an album like this since I was 19."

Åkerfeldt went a little deeper and described the music contained within ‘Heritage’, saying, "It's quite intense at times in some 'old' murky way, and quite beautiful and stark at times, if I may say so myself. It's obvious I'm going to say nice things about it since I wrote basically the whole piece, but I guess it will raise a few eyebrows and it certainly is an acquired taste. I think you'll need a slightly deeper understanding of our music as a whole to be able to appreciate this record. I've realized my influences for this album are so diverse that I can't really say what it sounds like. If I can compare it to any other band, it would have to be Opeth, but it's different from the stuff we've done before. I've listened a lot to Alice Cooper for the last year, yet I can't say it sounds like 'No More Mr Nice Guy'. I hope you'll like it once you hear it."

The album was produced by Åkerfeldt and mixed along with labelmate and friend, Porcupine Tree frontman/guitarist Steven Wilson. Longtime collaborator Travis Smith also worked with Åkerfeldt to create, design and execute the album’s artwork.

Track listing for ‘Heritage’ is as follows:

Heritage
The Devil's Orchard"
I Feel the Dark"
Slither
Nepenthe
Haxprocess
Famine
The Lines in My Hand
Folklore
Marrow of the Earth

‘Heritage’ will be released in several configurations that will certainly ignite the interest of Opeth’s legion of fans, known for their passion for collecting and collectibles. The album will be released as a standard version, as a special edition loaded with extras, as a box set exclusive to the bands own official Omerch webstore and as a double vinyl LP. Something for every Opeth fan!

Meanwhile, Opeth will be appearing at the Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth Park on Sunday 10th July.

Dude! 10 songs! what got into them?
well, that's certainly something new, unless it's 4 interludes and 6 epics like usual Big smile

also new is that he doesn't announce it as "the most brutal thing we've ever done", that never happened before

really curious now

Hi Guys

Opeth just revealed the new cover art from their forthcoming album HERITAGE.
What are you thinking of it. Sort of radical change from other Opeth cover but I like it, reminds me of 70's prog art. I think that the skull on the ground represents the past members and Per is falling to join them. Any thought on that ?
Anyway here's the picture :

Is this a joke?
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Most surely. Remember the DVD cover that faked the Deep Purple cover?

I WILL HAVE THE VINYLE VERSION AND PIN UP A GIANT POSTER OF THIS COVER AT MY WINDOWS.

No, seriously, it's even better than a Cathedral cover!

It could be a joke. Having the faces on the cover is horrifyingly cheesy. And I hope they don't go all classic prog on this album. I'm sure the music will be 100 x's better than the cover anyway

Very different cover! It's very folky. But I don't like that the faces of the members are on the tree. Also this idea of putting Wiberg's head to fall from the tree is very bad.

The heads in the tree are soooooooooooooo lame. Other than that though it's pretty cool, very different.
