Does anyone have any good examples of simultaneous riffing by an organ and electric guitar in prog metal?
I find that most times it goes to a sort of interlude when the organ comes in but I'm looking for a band where the organ and guitar are equally important and sound good and well mixed together. |

I think I noticed some of that in Ayreon.

An example of what I'm talking about is like around 13:56 in Octavarium by Dream Theater. I feel like the organ and guitar are both extremely important in that section.
Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH_9lJxeiXg I guess its also one of my favorite tonalities in a song, the organ is so old school and unique while the guitar has such a great powerful, smooth tone. Edit: Thanks for the reply! Looks like I got post ninja'd! Edited by AnchovyRun - May 30 2011 at 18:58 |

Opeth (Ghost Reveries and Watershed) and Enslaved constantly use organs.
Ars Nova, though listed in symphonic, has two progressive metal masterpieces (Biogenesis Project and Seventh Hell), all with lush and proeminent keyboards and organs. Derek Sherinian's early solo albums as well as Planet X (his other band) have some quite interesting organs and keys. The list goes on, but so far so good. |

I think a good example would be early Uriah Heep. With Ken Hensley on Hammond

Very unknown but VERY amazing band "The Odious". Track 2, "Threads", at around the 3:15 mark.

I don't believe any of those are progressive metal, lol.
Also, it appears that the Mastodon intro is indeed organ . . . Hmm, I could swear it was a mellotron, but anyway iot is still a minute of it drowned in 50 minutes of prog sludge. Edited by CCVP - May 31 2011 at 07:29 |

You're absolutely right. My mistake. I thought it was prog as I missed the metal.
