Hello I don't really know the whole VDGG and Peter Hammill solo discographies, but I am very interested in it. I began with the mp3s on this site and found "Pawn Hearts" elsewhere, and I will surely buy some of their albums soon. My question : could someone tell me what is the meaning of the lyrics of "a louse is not a home" ? It seems to be some good poetry and to bear particular themes in it (faith is very present) ... Are all songs of Peter Hammill of this quality (lyrically speaking...and musically) ? |

And do you have any idea of what is his purpose in "a louse is not a home" ? I put the lyrics here for those who want to check it out (it's a bit long) : "Sometimes it's very scary here; sometimes it's very sad; |

I take these lyrics as the reflections of a very lonely person bordering on the schizophrenic (for which the cracked mirror is a symbol). Peter Hammill uses "House" as metaphor in another song too, "House With No Door", which in my opinion is the penultimate song about loneliness. The mirror is a symbol that appears in many Peter Hammill songs; e.g. "Mirror Images" and "This Side of the Looking Glass".

Oh, and by the way, on his homepage (http://www.sofasound.com ) he gives explanations to some of his records; just browse through "Discography". The albums marked with 3 * have explanatory notes. Unfortunately "The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage", where "A Louse Is Not a Home" is from, doesn't have such notes yet, but he updates them from time to time.

Perhaps as the source of a self-confrontational alter-ego - The Undercover Man, etc? Some interesting reflections on the track's meaning here: http://www.vapp.de/ph/TSCATES.htm Edited by Duncan |
