I'm 17 and primarily listen to the classics like Genesis, ELP, Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd, Camel etc. The only metal I listen to is Iron Maiden, Bathory, Summoning, Therion and Suidakra; non of those being really prog. I have steered away from metal since my youth due to musical taste.

I'm 30 now, but I came into prog rock at around 17 years old as metalhead (except for RUSH, who I had loved since I was 12) I was never close-minded to other genres, it just took a while until I heard the right prog. Camel's MIRAGE is the first prog album I fell in love with, and In The Court Of The Crimson king quickly followed. I'm ashamed to admit I discovered Camel because Mikael Akerfelt from OPETH said they were his favorite band, and back then I was a huge opeth fan (we<re talking first 3 albums here, they lost me at Still Life) but now I can't stand opeth and I cringe everytime I see one of their crappy albums rated about 30 spots higher than a masterpiece like HOT RATS
I think MOST metalheads are open minded to prog rockand related genres, but of course you have the occasional ""purist" who only listens to obscure neo-nazi black metal bands who release limitied edition albums on tape only, but then again, you have those types of narrow minded purists in every genre

I just turned 19... so, I guess I don't belong here anymore 
But I discovered prog when I was 13... And it still is my main musical love!
(not a big prog-metal fan by the way...)

It seems as though a lot of young prog fans listen to the classics but I wonder if any other young people listen to modern prog like The Tangent, The Flower Kings, Neal Morse, Phideaux etc. Most of my recent interest has been with newer bands.

You should listen to Par Lindh Project. They have some fantastic baroque inspired prog.

I'm a 16 year old guy and i love mainly the prog from the 70s like Rush, Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Gentle Giant, VDGG etc. Honestly I'm not the biggest fan of the newer prog but i do like Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, and others.

Im 17 and I like alot more than prog metal....Actually, it is probably the minority. Yes, I like it, and I'm heavily familiar with "classic prog" as well, but most of what i listen to tends to be neither or somewhere in between. I listen to alot of Jazz, Avant-Garde rock, Krautrock, post rock, trip-hop, modern clasical........and so on. Im a huge Zappa fan.
All of that being said, I still listen to Porcupine Tree. And Periphery, And Yes. And Jon Zorn. And everything else.
Is this really necessary for a topic? Of course prog fans under 18 listen to more than just prog metal. There are an abundance of users here to show it.

I'm seventeen and i can hardly listen to most prog metal. My favorite bands are Tool, Marillion (with Hogarth), and Godspeed You! Black Emperor just to name a few.

I want to get it too but the only way is through his website with paypal. I wish he could re-release his music so it would be easier to buy. The cheapest price for Veni Vidi Vici is $34 used on amazon.

We as a forum have covered this topic several times already. Each and every time we do, we all come to 'realize' that infact young people do like other prog music. It didn't surprise me to get this kind of response from the youth, as they are members of the forums afterall.  |

As someone old enough to have teenage children who have ZERO understanding or appreciation of prog, it is heart warming to see that there are, in fact, people in that age group with musical taste
