@James & Mark: Ah, that makes sense. The Nazi salute is actually the Italian fascist salute, which is actually the Ancient Roman salute. I suppose Lazio's gallery uses it as a Roman thing but with a fascist undertone - they're at least quite xenophobic from what I know. |
I always got the impression he was doing it for shock value. But that makes sense

The thing is though, putting your arm in celebration could easily be deemed as a fascist/Nazi salute. Of course, it sounds like di Canio did it often though. I don't think he did it at West Ham though.
Oh and there's still rumours about Hoddle linking up his Academy with Swindon. I'd go with that! Put him in as Director of Football and have his Academy as a feeder club. Mmm.

Yes, Alex is correct. I quote: And as for the whole fascist thing, I think we should put this in
perspective. It's very much an Italian thing, especially between Lazio,
where Di Canio played, and arch-rivals Roma (who are seen as a socialist
club). It's not unlike the whole Rangers Celtic rivalry and the
'salute' is something the Lazio fans do - bit like Gazza with his flute
playing faux pas.

Oh and here's one for Mark, just one post down from the above: Calderwood was considered a very boring manager at Northampton and then
again at Notts Forest. Very defensive and negative football. Great
player and Captain but manager? No thanks.
Thoughts on Colin Calderwood, Mark?

Both my children are wild, disobedient, and fussy this morning. My wife is working on a cake for my sister-in-law, and it isn't coming out right at all, so she's fussy too.
I'm getting a headache. ![Pinch Pinch](smileys/smiley26.gif)

I never really paid much attention to Northampton while he was there. He was successful for sure and they're a shambolic team now compared to when he was there. And pretty much the same with Nottigham Forest, though I do remember him getting criticised, I think that was when I used to watch the Football League highlights on ITV

Did you see that dude on television who has the biggest collection of Smurf memorabilia in the world? That'll be Henry or Matt in 10 years time; only with MLP: Friendship is Magic.

There were rumours last year that Ossie Ardiles wanted to be our Manager. It's gone quiet... I'd love for him to have another go. We need his South American style again.
