Topic: The Dichotomy of Prog Mainstream Posted: November 16 2004 at 14:42 |
On one side - The Floyd fans.......
On t'other - The Genesis fans......
Do you all agree with this polarisation of mainstream prog politik ??

Nah, love both in equal measure
more divisive - Floyd pre- and post Waters, Genesis pre- and post-Gabriel?
and the answer to both questions is better with than without...

Possibly - Genesis became the vehicle for the Cockney drummer to ruin for the sake of his pop-aspirations ! COLLINS IS THE ANTI-CHRIST !
As for Waters, never heard any post Waters floyd and therefor have no axe to grind !
See I'm in the Genesis hemisphere me.....

I've never thought that there was a line to be drawn dividing factions of prog-lovers. Genesis and Floyd, both great bands.I hate early Floyd (I'm a Meddle onwards fan) and detest post Wind&Wuthering Genesis.
As for the poison dwarf

I think if you were fan of either, the one you are currently a fan of would spark interest in the other, therefore being a fan of both. Couldn't imagine Floyd and Genesis causing a division between prog lovers. Maybe eras, Such as late Pink Foyd is certainly better than late Genesis, I don't think you can argue that.

we've been here with the poison dwarf before on another thread but while most of his frontman work with Genesis ain't in the same ballpark as Gabriel, ole Phil was a helluva drummer. Apocalypse 9/8 - i rest my case.
Just a shame he didn't stick to the tub thumping.

To be honest - I haven't heard any pre-meddle Floyd - I like Echoes but detest all the other tracks on Meddle - I must confess to liking a few songs on ATTWT and a lot of Duke, I even liike ABACAB for some strange reason, but only as my taste broadened in the years since my 30th birthday - I listen to a lot of classical music - I love Ravel, Bach, Stravinski and Borodin, Beethoven, and Rachmaninov......
Listen to classics and you can see how Banks was infuenced by his Classical teaching at Charterhouse......

I would have thought most Genesis and Floyd fans would be on the same "side".
Perhaps the battlelines would more likely be:
- Neo-prog (Marillion/Arena/Spocks Beard etc.)
- "Traditional" early 70's prog (Yes/Genesis/Floyd etc.)
- Jazz prog (Soft Machine/John McLaughlin/Magma etc.)
I reckon most around here would go for two out of those three, meeting in the middle. Personally, I'd go for the top two and leave the third.

i would have to agree with easy livin, while i would think that the "sides" would be on more the style than the band.

"Real" prog vs "progressive metal." (Or as I say, regressive mental.)
There's your battle line!

It is simple: floyd are for emotional people
genesis are for cerebral-emotional people
I choose GENESIS, because floyd satisfies only my feelings!

I love Floyd... I'm ok with Genesis... and no need to mention that other band I love.
But... I'm actually divided in the Neo-prog section... I love Marillion, I like Arena, but I just don't like Spocks Beard. (Altho the Archives has Spocks Beard listed as Symphonic.. not Neo)

Eddy likes Yes, King Crimson and Gentle Giant....I believe that gives him a right to be here.
Personally I don't like Yes
are you going to take my prog rock membership card away because I may not share your point of view on what is a good band or bad band in the progressive rock genre?
