Wow this AV looks complicated, wouldn't you be better off without a government at all just like us here?

The results in the morning could be interesting... I am not sure which way the vote will go. I think it might be close. However, I'll stick my neck out and say it'll be a No, unfortunately.

So basically you're to be left with two parties in Parliament with AV. |
No, there'll be about as broad a spread as there currently is (mostly Labour and Tory, a reasonable chunk of Lib Dems, a scattering of MPs from Irish, Welsh and Scottish parties and, if we're lucky, a Green or two). AV is a system which will certainly benefit the major parties more than the minority parties, but not to the same ludicrous extent as FPTP, where an MP can win their seat on less than 30% of the overall vote.
|
Sorry, I was being a bit obtuse yesterday. I see that all this does is insure whatever MP gets elected in a "district" or whatever you call it gets a majority vote as a result of AV.
Doesn't seem like that bad of an idea, what are the pitfalls that you guys see with this?
|
That's the catch - there are no apparent pitfall. The No campaign has made some wild claims, but none of those have stood up to scrutiny. |
Exactly. The No campaign's claims have ranged from patronising "it's far too complicated!" bullsh*t to completely fabricated figures about how much it will cost "AV or dead babies? YOU decide!". They've run a disgraceful campaign, and it's been frustrating to see so many normally rational, intelligent people fall for their outrageous and fictitious claims. The only true downside to AV is that it doesn't solve the problem of proportionality. That will only happen through a system like Single Transferable Vote, but option was never on the table and if the No campaign wins (like everyone's predicting) then it probably never will be.

The most annoying thing about these elections is people have forgotten that Local Council elections also take place. It's not just the AV vote. My mate said he was going to vote but didnt realise it was for local elections either. Grrr!

Obviously a stupid campaign. If the choice is between AV and dead babies, I’d choose AV.

Right. I voted. I voted Yes. It was always a choice between yes or spoiled ballot. But I think it might have been these stupid No adverts on this very site that swang it for me. Oh well not sure thats the right way to go about things though.

Seems the right choice to me. Btw, yesterday I was a little confused by one of your comments – it seemed like you thought a "No" vote was a vote for PR (which I interpet as proportional representation), though in fact I think (and hope) that you mean the opposite. Am I right?

I don't remember really. But I suspect I was complaining that we don't have a vote for a PR system as neither the FPTP (Obviously) nor the AV system are PR. Or maybe I am more than confused

Edit: No the f**kers are back again!
Anyway its either Yes or spoiled ballot time! (Which is a vote in my book fo PR)

You actually said that voting no is spoiled ballot time, which in your book is a vote for PR. Yeah, I know, sometimes you write the opposite of what you mean on the Internet. Happens to all of us.

That's what happens when you mess with punctuation. What I meant was I would either vote Yes. Or spoil my ballot, which would be a vote for PR by not voting for either of the choices on offer.

Yes, Plaid & Plaid. Shortly I'm heading off to the count in Pembroke Dock to assist. I'll be home about 06.00 - mad, or what?

If I was British, and if the new system was implemented, I would probably have voted:
1. Green 2. Labour 3. The beautiful woman who hates war and wants everybody to be happy.
