At their best, Genesis still couldn't come close to the power of the Crimson King.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Definitely King Crimson (especially for Larks'Tongues in Aspic, but not only for that), though I do like The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway very much.

I never ceased to be astonished by this forum's obsession with Genesis, who are slightly above average at best.

Really? Lark the Starless Tongue in Bible Black Aspic prefers Genesis? Is your screen name a misnomer? Maybe you should call yourself Lamb the Moonlit. Kidding, of course.
King Crimson slightly, but not because of Genesis' shift in musical direction. That doesn't bother me because we were all fed up with art rock at the time, and the times - they were a changing.

So I am curious - why single out Tony Banks? As a keyboard player I admire some of his work immensely. Am I missing something?

Genesis for me. I like a lot of King Crimson's work, but I like all eras of Genesis; they made some great pop songs/albums, too.

That apart, Banks was the man, the amazing songwriter. Opinions will always be divided on his keyboard work but the credit for such brilliant compositions as Dancing with the moonlit knight cannot be taken away from him. In the five man and four man era, none of them were really so polarizing in their contributions. Banks I have addressed above, Collins was a superb drummer, Gabriel made the proceedings lively, Hackett made them soulful and memorable. All supported by the underrated Rutherford.
