1. John Petrucci 2. Tosin Abasi 3. Jimmy Page (2 and 3 can be switched, both for innovation and technical skills) 4. Alex Lifeson 5. Jimi Hendrix (if not considered prog, then switch him for David Gilmour)

I would be happy to go with that as well although I might substitute either Fripp or Gilmour for Jan Akkerman
of the modern players Chris Fry of Magenta is probably my favourite.

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

1. Jan Akkerman 2. Jukka Tolonen 3. Coste Apetrea 4. Gary Green 5. Martin Cockerham
The ones I mentioned here might not be regarded as amazing guitarists with insane skills (except maybe Jukka Tolonen). But I really like their way of playing and since you asked for the greatest guitar players and not the best, my list looks like this.

In no particular order;
Steve Howe
Robert Fripp
Alex Lifeson
Jan Akkerman
Richie Blackmore
all for very different reasons. If you added in Ryo Kawasaki, Al Di Meola and Kazumi Watanabe, this would be simply a list of my all time best guitarists regardless of genre.
