After reading the discription on Wayside I had to buy it. Mid/late softs and zeuhl...genius idea! After giving it one listen through I wasn't amazed beyond belief, but it did have its moments. Certainly will give it more listens, can see it being a grower. Either way, I love the concept and see great potential in the band, so hopefully they will make more than one album.

Also, now that it has been out awhile...anyone here get the Humble Grumble CD yet? If so opinions? The write up sounds quite nice, and it is on Altrock, so its probably great, but just figured I'd ask.

Bought it from Wayside as well (along with the other Soleil Zeuhl releases) and quite like it, but it's a grower and needs more listening.
Yes, I received it with the three other releases from AltrOck that came out together from Marcello for reviewing. This is a fun album, if anything, it reminds me of the spirit of Miriodor (spirit, not sound). I'll post a review eventually, I just have many to go through at the moment. To my ears, AltrOck hasn't had any weak or even average release. Don't know how they do it, but these guys have wonderful ears I'd love to buy them a beer someday and have a chat. On another note: I just posted this on my blog, but I want to spread the word here as well, as I'm sure some folks here would appreciate it. Red Army is the solo project of Daniel Kessler who plays an aggressive and somewhat free-form jazz/rock (and a tinge of Zeuhl) with instruments including a Rhodes, various bass-instruments, various percussion, analog boxes, synths, noise producing devices etc. The music is free flowing, open and spacey, but also dense and rough. It projects a peculiar (but good) vibe and provides for a good late night listening. I think that this should be picked up by some related label as it's quite promising and good to my ears. Right now you can stream and download the album in digital format on Red Army's Bandcamp. |

Assaf, so good to hear from you! Just hours ago I was thinking to myself 'I miss Assaf, and especially all of his great suggestions..." You always turned me onto such great music! What is the link to your blog [maybe it can help w/ what was lost when you left the team...:(]?

Hey Cleo, how are you? All is well I hope! Yeah, Chance:Risiko would be my least favourite release of theirs, and yet it's grown on me slowly. But that would be the one I'd pick out as well. I saw their announcement of the new albums (posted it in my blog as well); I already have The Nerve Institute, since Mike Judge, who is the man behind it, sent it to me some time back before AltRock picked him up and Udi Re-Mastered it. It's excellent and you should check out his previous incarnation Sinthome, which is a fabulous album of avant/pop sensibilities (I added him to PA under Cross Over, but he would like to be moved to Avant, maybe when the new album is out, there's a chance of that?). The new October Equus sounds delicious as well. And I'm eager to see what Ske has in store for us after hearing previous things he did and posted on Progressive Ears. Oh, the link to my blog is in my signature (or you can google Hanging Sounds). |

Also, I bought from Wayside, alongside the Soleil Zeuhl releases, the album Contredanses by Larsen Rupin
Quite good avant prog (though the spoken vocals can be aggravating).

Well indeed, thanks! My comp. died some weeks ago, but I replaced it w/ a "Super Computer" w/ 23" monitor, so I'm rather in heaven...;)
Yes, Udi linked to your interview on FB* - very nice indeed mon ami! See what I mean: you know so much good stuff before...!
I will do so!
I imagine NI w/ fit fine in Avant. I will wait until I get it and send samples to the rest of the team...
Agreed! I have a FB friend who did vocal work on the SKE, can't wait to hear it...
[Duh!] Thanks Assaf! *btw, you should join us there - a lot of cool people I was surprised to learn [had thought it was just a trendy teenager thang]. |

Yes, I really like it. I have his 1st, A-Ban, which is quite good also [though not quite as...] I sent samples to the team long ago as I recall... [don't know what happened to that...] I didn't think much of his last one though, has a bit much of those techno drum beat samples going on for my taste [I severely dislike techno]. |

Thanks for the response. I figure I wouldn't be disappointed, but thought I should ask. The discription on Wayside is almost too good to be true. But I agree...AltrOck is brilliant. I haven't heard everything they've released, but that which I have have all be excellent at least, with one exception....and that exception is Mirthkon. But I think that's just me...everyone else seems to love it.
And I'll definitely stream that Red Army album when I get the chance.

Indeed it has! Things are ok over here. I'm a bit under the weather at the moment but hopefully that will be resolved soon. Other than that just yrying to find a job and listen to as much music as I can. How's things with you been?
And oh yeah. I expect it too. I only listened to it twice, and once was while driving, so I do need to give it a good focused listen.

So has anyone here got/heard the new Cheer-Accident album yet? I'm probably not going to be able to afford it for a few months yet, so I'd love to know what other people make of it.

Yes, I have it, though I need some more listens to really get to know it better. This is not Fear Draws Misfortune, but then again, this band changes sound and style from album to album. It does have some songs here that are in the same ballpark as some of the songs on Fear..., and others which go elsewhere. Not a bad album, but like I said, too early for me to really absorb all of it as a whole (and I need a proper listening setting and environment, which lately, due to a huge amount of work, has been hard to find). |

Bump!
Anything exciting happening in the RIO/Avant world as of now?? (Or anything exciting happening with the people that usually frequent this thread??)
Had another round of AltRock releases since...from the ones I've heard very good batch. Gotta say, I love the new direction of the new October Equus album. Perhaps a little less unique than their previous, but much more exciting to my ears. (And I like thier first two (especially the debut) a good bit as well.)

Recently I've discovered a couple of bands which to my understanding are going to be on PA soon (don't quote me on that though, I may have it wrong)... Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores, and Volcano the Bear. I don't think either have a release this year but both have great music.
I think they've been mentioned here before, but Make a Rising have also been getting numerous spins from me. This song isn't one of their weirdest but that video is very strange!
