I've only read one book and he did spend a lot of time in boats and on the beach, so I guess he did like the sun of Algeria a lot.

He loved swimming/bathing, it was one of his favourite pastimes. And yes, The Plague has extended tomes on the weather and climate of Oran.

Ha, there ain't much ambient on any of the Meshuggah releases.

Have you listened to Uneven Structure?  They're a pretty blatant Meshuggah clone but they do put a pretty big twist on it with super heavy atmosphere.  They're worth checking into.
