The first EP by Merkabah can also be added to this list. It is nominally a Space Rock band, but the EP would defrost the hearts of any Post Rock fan here. See www.myspace.com/merkabah for download (link under the EP cover art work).

Hmm, if I were to start such an index again, I'd want it to be for the metal genres, or from Crossover. IMO these are the genres where the best free music comes from (along with post/math).

And I added to the index the new EP from Up There: The Clouds, nice stuff.

So, let's start the index of Experimental/Post Metal or Tech Metal! Can't wait for that!

Hey harmonium. I wanted to get back to you to tell what I thought of the EP's you suggested.

Rememberable Rifts by Hoarder Myna is very techinal, what I originally thought math rock was going to be like, very technical with little overall melody to go with it. Overall an interesting listen with the last track being a standout one for it's slightly more post-rock feel with the arpeggioed guitar and slow build.

The Fugue EP (Ancient Glass) is the one I think I enjoyed the most. It has a very laid back feel with keyboard as well as typical guitar/bass/drum. Very melodic too which is something I enjoyed immensely.

I'm giving a second listen to Tangled Thoughts of Leaving's Tiny Fragments as I write this. This EP is the strangest of the bunch. I was astounded to hear jazz piano, metallic style drums with double bass drum, and metal guitar throw into a blender. I'm still unsure what I think about this one, very eclectic too say the least, even with a screaming section!

Sunriseinthesea by Time Columns is very melodic. I have only given it one listen at this point, but I like the listen I gave. Very chill with its layered guitars. Something I noticed was the lack of bass which was different.

Thanks for the suggestions! Would you have any suggestions for math rocks bands to look into when I get money to spare? Also, what would be some good post-rock free downloads? Free legal downloads are awesome! Smile

Cool! Thanks for the feedback. Good to know you liked the music, I was worried a bit because I made the recommendations without having listened to them recently.

Here are my three favourite math rock albums, which you absolutely have to get. One is Russian Circles' "Enter", which I think it can be streamed in full on YouTube:

Here's Don Caballero's second album, titled "2":

And the third is "Mirrored" by Battles:

Three albums so very different, each emphasizing another facet of math rock.

Also, here are some of my favourite post-rock free downloads:

TUNA LAGUNA / It's A Fudge / download
(for the jazzy side of post-rock)
THE MONROE TRANSFER / I dreamt I was a hammer & everything was glass EP / download
(check out the others if you liked this)
YOUTH PICTURES OF FLORENCE HENDERSON / Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson / download
(pure classic post-rock)
And especially this, even if it's not yet added to PA (but it will be, soon):  http://jovenabuelo.bandcamp.com/album/ni-o-sol

I don't know if this has been posted already, but OVER THE OCEAN is an indie/post rock band that gives their album out for free, unless you want to support them Wink
They haven't been added to PA yet, but it's still really great music.

Thanks for the suggestions! I gave a listen to the youtube videos you posted as well. Russian Circles and Battles sounded good to me. I'm not a huge metal fan, so Don Caballero would be a very acquired taste. I'll put the first two on my wishlist. Of course I still need to expand my classic prog collection e.g. Gentle Giant and VDGG, but I'll get around to it sometime! Thanks for taking the time to help me out! Smile

That Merkabah EP was very good. I especially loved the song "Narwhals".

Giraffes? Giraffes!, a math rock band, is giving out some of their albums for free on their Facebook page. It's pretty far back the news, but its there.

"Nobody"? I don't think anyone else can edit my post (except for the Admins of course) LOL

I was waiting for you to complete the discography, like you told me...

Thanks mate, I'm checking this out.

EDIT: wow, there are 22 releases on their Bandcamp, and we only have two on PA. completing this discography will take quite some time Dead LOL

EDIT2: thankfully those weren't albums by Giraffes? Giraffes!. Their two free downloads were added to the Index.
