Thanks Assaf, I've only heard that one song and wonder what his first two sound like.

Thanks for the links andyman1125! I checked out the vids too, good stuff. I'm interested in what that EP of 8-bit music sounds like.

The 8-bit EP is rather quirky but does sound kind of cool. Imagine a jazz rock soundtrack to a N64 game LOL

Ego On The Rocks is a group from Germany featuring two former members of Eloy listed under Psychedelic/Space Rock. This is the only song I have heard from them. From their only album Acid In Wounderland (1979), this song is called "Godbluff":

Planet X are an American Jazz Rock/Fusion group started by former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian. I've only heard a few of their songs. This one is called "Her Animal" from the first album Universe released in 2000:

I don't think that Planet X is so obscure.

But they aren't exactly a 'household name' either, so I included them. Not all the artists I've posted are extremely obscure, but they generally fall outside the Top 100 Albums/Top 50 Artists lists on here. Some of this music has only been heard by three people in the world and some of it was Top Ten in some countries, but later forgotten.

Tomorrow I'm going to do something on The Residents. They are not very obscure but they are one of those groups where more people have heard of them than actually ever heard them. This is just a way to introduce people to some music they may not have heard before.

The Residents are a truly unique and original group. The members are unknown and usually wear eyeballs on their heads. Thought to be from California but most likely from "the South". The following songs come from The Commercial Album (1980). You can listen to all these songs in less than 5 minutes. The concept of The Commercial Album was to make 40 one-minute songs. This song is called "Picnic Boy" and features Lene Lovich on vocals:

The album features ex-Henry Cow members Fred Frith and Chris Cutler. Former Mother Of Invention Don Preston appears as well. Snakefinger does guitar but also sings on this song:

These videos are taken from The Commercial DVD, which features different artists interpretations of the 40 songs. Here's two more:

Crack The Sky is a Heavy Prog band from the US. Only heard a few songs by them and they have a new release out now. This song is called "Ice" from the self-titled from 1975:

Here's a song from Hungarian Symphonic Prog group Solaris. Not familiar with these guys at all. From their 1984 album Marsbeli Kronikak (Martian Chronicles), this song is called "M'ars poetica":

Weidorje was created by two former members of Magma. They only released one self-titled album in 1978, which I think is a great introduction to Zeuhl. You can read my review of the album on their artist page:

This song is called "Booldemug":

The 16 1/2 minute "Elohim's Voyage" is the highlight of the album:

Don Cabellero are a Math Rock band from the US. I'm not sure why Post-Rock and Math Rock are combined since each style is very different. Math Rock has more in common with post-70s Crimson, whereas Post-Rock has more in common with Krautrock groups like Ash Ra Tempel; Math is all about complexity and super human playing while Post creates textures and builds crescendos. DC were the first group I ever heard referred to as "math rock" although I have yet to hear a full album from them. This song is called "Stupid Puma" from their 1995 album Don Cabellero 2:

^ Not really, both came out of the early 90s experimental alternative scene, one was more interested about metal, King Crimson, new wave and avant-prog, the other was more into dream-pop, Neu!, Can, Glenn Branca and Brian Eno - I'm sure it's easy to figure out who's who. Wink In the early years there were bands who did both math and post and now, after both genres had their sepparate moments of glory and "classicism", they're showing their mutual affinity by mixing up again - see the case of Russian Circles and the many bands who sound like them.

Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned that some bands fit in both. I added and reviewed an album by Pivot who have been described as both. My point was that the two sound more different from each other than say "Jazz Rock" and "Fusion" do, for example. Anyway, you know more about that sub-genre than I ever would.

Sorry, I should have mentioned too I don't find your observation out of place. They are indeed two different genres, while in the case of JR/F the peculiar way the category is named reflects the peculiarity of this one genre which resulted from the intersection of two different genres. Certain bands have mannaged to walk on that thin line at the exact middle of Jazz and Rock, but some have leaned more on the jazz and other more on the rock; the difference between Colosseum and Mwhandishi or early Weather Report is indeed just as large as the difference between Don Caballero and Sigur Ros.

June Cleaver And The Steak Knives are a duo of brothers from the US listed under Eclectic. Only heard the two streaming songs here but they make me want to check out one of their albums. From their 2004 album Auricular Peculiar this song is called "Fit":

Thier s/t debut album is fantastic and was the Rolling Stone Album of the Year in 1975. Thier next two studio albums never lived up to the first but thier live album is very well done IMO. Here's my fav track from the s/t album followed by "Nuclear Apathy" from thier third studio album, Safety In Numbers which I think is thier best song.

Thanks for that! "Nuclear Apathy" was one of their songs I have heard before. I did not know about that Album Of The Year thing, that was interesting.

Mr. Brown were a Swedish group that released one album called Mellan Tre Ogon in 1977. They are listed under Prog Folk on PA. This is the only song I have heard from them but I like it, it's called "Recall The Future":
