I very rarelt listen to the Beatles. If the poll was framed in terms of who was more important then of course the Beatles would win by several landslides but on the basis of who I like more then its easily Rush.

I am sure that Rush were influenced by The Beatles, they have said it in some interviews, but I don't hear them talk as most on this poll say that it was a huge influence. What you hear Rush talk more about is The Who, Led Zepp, Cream, Yardbirds, Jimi Hendrix.....the first album is all this, no Beatles influence at all. And even when you watch "Beyond the Lighted Stage" the early stuff they were playing was not Beatles. Neil's band he was in was heavy Cream, Yardbirds and Jimi influenced.

I just think by this point most new bands of the late 60's and early 70's knew the Beatles were done, the world was filled with enough Beatles pop music...it was time for something different.

This is a great poll, as far as I am concerened Rush is winning this poll. The masses will always pick The Beatles in any poll. But those that are brave enough to dig deep and really want to understand music and what it means to be a part of a band/group, will pick Rush.

I tired of the Beatles by the time I reached 9 years old and haven't listened to them since.  That doesn't mean the Beatles were bad, it just means I heard their music several thousand times coming from radio, and the albums my older brother and sister played over and over again.    By the time I started listening to Rush in the mid 70's they quickly became my second favorite band to Led Zeppelin probably because I could hear the Led Zeppelin influence so prevalent in their early albums.   When their music took a more progressive direction it probably kept me interested in their music that much longer, although I go long periods without listening to Rush as well.   Overall, for me I would have to choose Rush by the mere fact they have kept my interest far longer than the Beatles.

I like the Beatles, but I can go months without listening to them. Now if I don't listen to 2112 at least once a month I feel sad. Cool

Definitely the Beatles. I don't care much for some of their biggest hits (Hey Jude, Let it Be, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Yesterday, etc) but they've just got so many amazing tracks.

Let me compare the albums from the best periods of both bands:
Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Yellow Submarine, The white double album and Abbey Road vs.
A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals.
Usually I prefer Rush, but it depends on the mood I'm in. I vote for Rush, even though they were far less influential than the Beatles.

Here's how it would be in my opinion, trying to be objective:
Beatles: Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, The White Album and Abbey Road
Rush: 2112, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures.

Have in mind I haven't heard Hemispheres neither Permanent Waves, just adding them because they're classics for the Prog fan. I love Caress of Steel, but in some type of musical terms it would be like adding Let It Be. From what I heard from Rush fans and ratings, Counterparts is another classic.

OGM u both forgot the BEST albums of rush

Beatles: Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, The White Album and Abbey Road
Rush: 2112, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, POWER WINDOWS, Hold you fire, Roll the bones, Presto.

my favorite album is Power Windows forever. the sound quality is so pure, clean and so appart of all other bands.
i think Power Windows era was totally new kind of futurist music, this was not influenced by other bands before i think. i never saw any other bands doing that kind of music.
Rush drummer vs Beatles drummer .. ha ha ok ... rush for sure.  Beatles drummer is a joke lol
geddy lee multitask ... rush for sure
rush more rousing band
they are only 3 making all that noise.
rush rush rush...

i can give to beatles, they invented .. some guitar chords
and they just were lil more sexy lol

but compared to rush .. musically they look a lil retard hehe sorry ... they should learn a little more to play ... espicially  beatles' drummer and they should try to learn other measure than 4/4
maybe a little 5/8 6/8 or 7/8 would be a very nice improvement :)

sorry for my poor english.
Rush all the way!

?????? why cant vote anymore????? :(:(

do i seem to joke ?

its the only thing u can answer ? u know im right !
u can't compare Power Windows albums to the minus Beatles .. cmon ..
its like comparing Beatles to prehistoric humans playing with bones xD.
its just not the same epoque. and not the same style of music.
Even if the beatles would still exist today and make albums .. they could never beat Power Windows Album from rush.
If u dont know the music .. if you are not musician or not working in a studio or soundman .. u may choose Beatles
but everyone who REALLY know the music .. will choose without a doubt Rush..
and im myself a musicien and i have ears really developed.
as a musician.. Jazz is one of the most complex music to make.
its wow when i watch good jazz musicians on youtube sometimes .. but i never put that kind of music in my music library.
but yeah i prefer beatles to jazz. at least xD!

but Rush Power Windows is not just performance but magic! for me its a masterwork

a remark tho: i think the fact "whatever band" we listen when we teen or young .. i think it mark psychologicaly us so much that , adults, we can't unhook of these good memories and all what was attached to it.
i think our childhood and when we were teen become in the futur our biggest nostalgia.
and this nostalgia is so intense (adults) that we are losing the reality.
A question of generation tastes and fashion of our times.
i noticed peeps of 60 years old .. will still listen to beatles, rolling stones and most of the music of these times. and for them .. its the best music ever.
peeps of 40 years old .. its more 80' pop music .. rush etc ... heavy metal and for them if the best music ever
peeps of 20 years old .. its more like rap .. dance music techno etc and for them if the best music ever.
etc etc

its hard to stay impartial.

Why do people refer to Apples and Oranges when we are asked to compare two apparently vastly different bands.

It seems perfectly reasonbable to compare Apples with Oranges.  They are probably the two most popular fruits, both can be juiced and both are often used as an ingredient in meat dishes and salads. They are even of a similar size and shape.

Chalk and Cheese is a better metaphor for this type of poll.

I am a musician, and I can consistently spell the word the same every time I type it. I prefer The Beatles. Perhaps you should not make claims such as "everyone who REALLY know the music"  will choose this band or choose that band. Invariably, you will be wrong. Like right now, for instance.

Your comments are so far off track; and to suggest that only certain people/musicians are allowed to make such judgements is even further from the truth. The crucial thing you miss here is taste. Another is the fact that Pan Am couldn't produce the Jumbo Jet without the Wright Brothers.

The biggest clue for you is in your closing comment "It's hard to stay impartial".

The Beatles used to be my favorite band, and I know perfectly all their discography, so I know what I'm talking about, and, to my opinion, they aren't even close to be as good as a single prog band

i said .. MAY choose the beatles if u are not musician .. and if you are Mr. everybody...
ok then if you are musician .. tell me what you play. did u ever play some beatles and some rush ?
if you are musician .. you are CERTAINLY NOT a drummer haha xD
so u may be a guitarist.
on guitar .. for the cords .. its almost equal , but for the guitar solos +10 to Lifeson (Rush Guitarist).
Bassman .. +10 for Geddy lee .. playing in same time Keyboards, bass pedal and singing in the same time.
Drummer +999999999999 to neil peart .. NOBODY cant say the inverse.
The beats are way harder to do than the beatles. 4/4 3/4 7/8 etc
and you know .. my father is a guitarist .. and made big tribute to the beatles here .. even georges harrison phoned him to congratulate him .. hes a BIG BIG beatles fan ...
he would vote for sure for the beatles ....
hes 60 years old .. but he cant play lifeson's solos hehe .. just chords thats all...
beatles guitarist was just kinda rythms .. solos was not very evolved
for their years .. it was really good. yeah for their years only..
also .. how old are u ? 60 ? hehe
these 2 facts (age and non muscian) have a lot to do in that.

i am musician .. im a solo guitar player , i play drum too synthétysers bass etc
i bet you are just guitarist rythm hehe or classic or a lil jazz.
but try to play some rush drum :) and we will re-talk of that after ok ? :)
