Hi,
I can not say that there is one over the other, and I do not separate music by "styles", or from any other art world ... see the last line on this thread! ... for me, the love of music, is all inclusive, and not measured with one of them high school stix, and not separated from the rest of the artistic world of the human spirit by a division that is petty and pathetic and by people that you can create more holes in their definitions than the nowhere man!
That said, and in no order, after the first one:
Amon Duul 2
Can
Klaus Schulze
Tangerine Dream
Ryuichi Sakamoto
Vangelis Papathanassiou
Mike Oldfield
Egberto Gismonti
Keith Jarrett
Peter Hammill
Roy Harper
Djam Karet
Frank Zappa
..... and other bands I have a spot for (order not important)
Banco
Ange
Cosmic Couriers
Ash Ra Tempel and Ash Ra
Popol Vuh
Carmen
Barclay James Harvest
The Doors
PFM
Le Orme
Guru Guru
Magma
Gong
Terje Rypdal and David Darling
And other progressive things ... that helped expand the minds and impressions of the time, place and the arts around them!
The Goons (Honorable Mention)
The Acting Studio folks in the 50's and 60's
The New Wave Directors (France early 60's)
The Angry Young Men (English Theater Scene 50''s and 60's)
The Scream Your Head Off (American Version of same above!)
The Beatles
Bernard Herrman (awesome music for his movies. Should be one of America's finest composers of the 20th century!)
... and lastly ... the ones that really broke the mold and showed us that film and art ... were important and also ... scary! Not to mention so real that it was scary!
Luis Bunuel
Salvador Dali
Pablo Picasso
Aleister Crowley (His novels and Tarot Research and Work)
Aldous Huxley
Carlos Castaneda
Pablo Picasso
Luis Bunuel
Igor Stravinsky
Essentially, to me, the division between "visual" and "music" and "art" or "literature", is totally invisible and doesn't exist, as it essentially comes from the same "spirit" or "soul" area ... it just has a "different" definition for many of us that do not know, or see those lights! And that is something that people that do not "see" those lights have an issue with, and have to create "divisions" and "definitions" to help everyone else ... as I said before, if you are "inside the light", you don't need light bulbs! ... and I like to say ... WAKE UP ... just like that XTC song!

Hi,
The hard part with so many of these lists is that they are not varied enough, suggesting that most folks have not heard other, and different, musics that might give them a better idea. I kinda find it sad when I check a list and it is almost all exclusive to American and English bands ... and one token odd one (so to speak) ... and that would be a sign that the ear is "comfortable" with a particular style and sound, and not tuned to any other music, that is also progressive and expressive.

Eh? They're lists of people's 10 favourite prog bands, not lists of bands they have heard or like.
They are also for people who can count up to ten

well Mike Oldfield in a single person and not a band but, he plays the role of a band himself and his music contains much more instruments than almost any band :p
