^To be honest, I'm surprised he's not starting in the top 10, he looks to be about as fast as Kobayashi already.

I'm worried about Maldonado though, he looks to be a lot slower than Rubens and if that doesnt change soon he could end up costing them a lot of points and championship position, which means they'll probably loose more money than he brings.

Perez has had an impressive showing IMO
Of course he is a rookie on a middle pack team, but hopefully he can show some life and move up in the future.
Honestly, HRT was running close to the pace most of qualifying. Closer than I would've thought. Didn't end up too far off pace, at least Liuzzi... why the hell they picked Karthikayean is beyond me. They couldn't find anyone else????

Yeah, I wasn't sold on Maldonado. Only time will tell but a pretty unspectacular career in GP2 didn't give me high hopes for him.
Speaking of high hopes, Kubica is making a tremendous recovery I hear, expected to be walking soon and he hopes to be back in the seat this year! I doubt that, but still....what a beast.

This also may be Heidfeld's best, and last, chance to ever get a win!

Anyway, can't wait for the season to finally start for real! Race should be one 1:30 am here, so I can stay up till 4 and be able to sleep in on Sunday Big smile

I work Sundays, but at least I only have to get up at 6am, it was 5 for qualy. The real kicker is that the clocks go forward one hour tonight, which means even less sleep!

HRT are 10 seconds off the pace, thats a lot for what is effectively a re bodied 2010 car, and dont remotely belong on track with that. There hasnt been a team that bad since Lola in 97.

Well again, can only go off what broadcasters say. They figured maybe the stewards would give em a pass since it's the first race.

I just don't get the point, there was no 107% rule before. Why now?
I assume it's designed to keep really slow cars off the track that can be a pain in the ass or dangerous but I don't know...I just figure why the hell not? It's part of racing and feels weird not allowing a team to participate.

Besides, ALMS has 4 separate classes on track at once! That'd be like F1, GP2, F3000 and maybe some formula renault cars all racing at once! Though HRT is pretty much a GP2 car LOL

Oh dear, KERS is back.

I know they want to create more overtaking, but they should leave that to track design.
I'm not a fan of this sacrificing skill for entertainment.
I used to lol at CART (and later Indy) for having the "push to play" giving them the small boost.

Sounds like a video game, and I dont think it ever increased overtaking. Even if it did...talk about show over sport. Ugh. Whatever, I doubt it'll have much effect.

Edit: Especially with the movable wing. Seeing it now with Button and Massa. The KERS is balanced by the movable wing. I guess that balance will create some battles but in terms of overtaking....even with both on Button wasn't making any progress on Massa.

Pretty good. Usual bundle up, some sweet moves, pretty clean though. No madness, only one car went a little off track.

The thing that surprises me the most after such a long time of watching F1 only once in a while is that they were already changing their tires 20 minutes into the race. That was strange, I don't remember this being done so early.

Also, I've never heard of the "kers" and its properties before. Shocked I had to wiki several spelling variants until I found it.

The two Mercedes are out, what a pity.

Oh!
Well Alex my friend, the new tire supplier this year purposely designed to wear alot more.
The idea was being:
1) tire wear would be more in the hands of the drivers
2) more pit stops

Up until now the tire wear has been much more extreme, but all teams/drivers have controlled it well.

And yeah the KERS is pretty much a speed boost LOL  You say you havn't watched in a decade? That would do it LOL KERS is a new thing.

Now that you say it, I think I read something about the new tires.

The kers thing reminds me of video games, you have to race through that shiny thing on the track and once you hit it, voila! you boost you speed for 10 seconds, which will help you pass through helpless adversaries. Then it stops and you come back back to your regular speed. LOL

Speaking of Mercedes...no idea what happened with Schumi. He was just out suddenly, as for Rosberg...
In his old age Ruebens is becoming a bit fiery and out of control.
Went off track in qualifying, during the race, forced in between two cars and then shoved himself right into Nico.

I may have to take back my Ruebens 2011 champ prediction LOL

I watched only once in a while since those times when Schumi was racing without any real adversaries.

The annoying moshkito-type commentator I mentioned is no more, the new owners of the rights have a different commentators team. This means I'm going to watch on a regular basis from now on. Big smile

That's honestly it.
It was used in North American open wheel a few years back (for like 3 or 5 seconds) and now in F1.
Not really a fan...

Glad to hear Alex! Big smile
You missed 2003? That was a good year (my first one watching F1) when Kimi took the fight right to Schumacher.
Also since his retirement there has been some nutty years!

In 2001 I left home for Uni which meant no TV for most of the year, excepting the breaks of course. That's when my following of sports, TV shows, etc. took a major blow. Around 2007 I started watching football again with the aid of internet streaming, an I'm slowly expanding towards other sports that I used to watch.

Speaking of the frequent tire changes, I find it amusing to hear the commentators qualifying a one-stop strategy as "interesting", and a second pit-stop mentioned as "only" the second pit-stop... LOL

EDIT: and what's with the lack of ads on the cars? Is it because of the crisis, or maybe because of tobacco / alcohol ads?

Ah. Well glad you are back. And at least you saw some of the "old" days
aka before 1994 when Schumacher came to dominate and all the changes took place.

This feels good actually. As I said, I was a big race fan and in 2003 (the year before I started watching handegg) I was like a racing nut. Which I'm going to be again  Big smile without handegg this season..

And Memo...Perez has been having a great debut thus far! Running well, smooth, and currently has fastest lap!

Edit: It's the alcohol/tobacco ads. Especially tobacco...

Yeah! What a great race from Sergio Pérez. I am really happy with this result, he climbed up six positions and finished even ahead of Kobayashi. What an extraordinary debut!

A great win by Vettel, and a wonderful performance by Petrov.

Well, decent race. Some good moments.

Congrats to Vettel who dominated all weekend, Hami and especially Petrov on his first podium! Kid is fast, and maybe now developing as a driver.

Perez had a great debut.
There is a lot of young talent in this field. It is loaded. Also a lot of teams seem competitive at least.
Expecting another good year!

Oh, also a big congrats to Kam Kobayashi, also scoring some points for Sauber.
Another team that looks to be a continual point scorer.
