I think that by covers you only think of "simple" covers, without any reinterpretation. I am (obviously, I hope) not thinking of those. What I have in mind is as "real" as possible.

Would you say that Jimi Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower is not real and we should stick with Dylan's version only, the other being a waste of time?

Heck, people covering Dylan really bring out the fact that the man is a great songwriter. Best album of pure cover's I've ever heard is the soundtrack to the Dylan film I'm Not There.
