The point being? They obviously designed the plant taking into account both earthquakes and tsunamis ... just not such severe ones, which is probably still not the fault of the engineers. Which tsunami wave height should you design for - 4 meters, 6 meters, 8 meters, 10 meters etc.? I read on the BBC website that apparently they designed for 8 meter waves and the actual waves were 9 meters ...

^ If nothing happens at that plant eventually, we should then say that engineers had taken into account even the severe ones. But the risk they took was very high... Surely a debatable issue.

How about the tsunami that didn't happen in Japan? I wouldn't have expected it to be forgotten so soon... And the quake in Haiti is still recent. |

Nature is cruel. When I think of all the natural disasters that have occurred around the world in my lifetime it's staggering.

I have tremendous sympathy for the folks in Japan affected by the recent disaster. A triple whammy of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear plant problems. God doesn't enter in to it for me. But I do find water driven disasters disturbing yet interesting. We can't live without water When it comes in the form of floods, tsunamis, hurricanes/typhoons, it can wreak some serious havoc.

Various influence also upon us in the West Japan ... lack of bottled water because of overbuying and overstocking by cold-hearted people and of course water pollution by the nuclear plant destroyed, lack of medicine for reasons of factories of supply damaged ...
Water or some farm products in the East Japan have been polluted by radiation, not much influential upon our (or infant's) body though ... cooling system in the nuclear plant not repaired yet, who knows our future?! |

Just want to come here and express my sadness about what happened to so many in nothern Japan.
And express my respect about how they are able to deal with this huge a crisis carmly and without any panic.
The only panic i'we seen in Japan, was from the turists and non japaneese residents.
I was in Okayama when the quake came, pretty far south, and safe from any real danger.
Back in Europe, unharmed and without loss of any of my Japaneese friends nor famly. Just hoping its gonig to stay that way.

Japan faces really big problems — but I’m impressed when I read an article like this:

Hi, Tamijo. Glad to hear you've been unharmed.
![]() Anyway, very sad and horrible news has come here ... afraid the nuclear reactor might have melted down partially? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12845304 ![]() |

More serious situation has been heard ... In The Reactor 2 of Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, the contaminated water is ten million times as polluted with radioactive substances as water in the reactor normally driven ... What a ominousness!

What the hell? Do they think that first stating ten million would make a hundred thousand sound less ominous?
"Phew, only a hundred thousand times stronger than normal. That's a relief!" Mistake, my arse! Edited by npjnpj - March 28 2011 at 09:51 |
