Need a prog blues sub genre or something.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

sure, and why not? Led Zeppeling took the blues and did progress it. look at a song like "Since I've Been Loving You" from their third album; that is progressive blues

Yep, couldn't agree more.
III is my favourite. IMO it is by far their most adventurous and progressive album.

I always thought Led Zep were too unsubtle, in your face. Good musicians, but a band of riffs and mad howls. But when I heard Kashmir, I thought that was brilliant. Not sure what album it was on, but must hear the rest if that's representative.

That can only mean you haven't listened to much, and al that you got to listen was opposed to your tastes. But subtlety is an integral part to Zepp's music, too, just as riffs, blues licks, howls and all that.

Not only that I agree, but I think that In My Time Of Dyin' is an even (much) more progressive blues. I'd even stand for the "prog-blues" descriptor in its case.

Here's a taste of subtle Zepp:
Thanks for that. True I didn't listen much to the albums, mostly heard radio stuff, though saw Zep 'live' a few times in the late sixties and didn't like them, thought it was all bombast. Seemed a shame for such great musicians, pandering to the madding crowd like goalkeepers doing camera dives. But it's fair to say my comments can only be sweeping statements when I haven't looked in depth. Thanks for the clues!

Only for a few songs ... not sure there is a whole lot of "blues" in the 1st and 2nd albums, where they really made music come alive like most others were not. This was serious rock music and then some!
Those bootlegs at the time still show this as a very important band, and quite progressive where too many others only give and did lip service! There was a reason, and a very big reason, why this band was big ... and in concert specially!
Very little material "repeats itself" in their first 3 albums ... and if you can't see that ... may I suggest that you go back to your mom's Elvis or Bobbi Darin collection! (hehehehe ... couldn't help it!)
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told! www.pedrosena.com
