The media needs to know that Radiohead is NOT the definition of prog.

I personally liked "The Flaming Lips inherit the mantle of playful prog created by Peter Gabriel-era Genesis." It seems like they just wikipedia'd "Prog Rock" and then copy + pasted in names of random bands to compare their entries to. Overall this was pretty silly.

We always have to remember that Progressive Rock emerged at a time when there was very little "music industry," and the entirety of Western Civilization was crying out for a new song.
Today, there are thousands of well-meaning artists who grew up listening to rock records and wish to ply their trade, but the market is already flooded with carefully-researched products, the audience does not wish to hear anything new, and there is precious little that is new to say in the rock language. For a revolution, we shall have to look elsewhere. |

Why on earth do they think that all Prog is now is Post Rock/Metal?
And I think it quite odd that I have not heard of any of the last 4 at all..... Well I suppose the guys at MSN music know their stuff right?

I want to kill whomever first thought of putting these types of articles into a f**king photogallery format so I have to click and load for every single part of it on every news website that I ever go to. The buttons don't even work on this one!
Everybody's already said my thoughts on the article itself, except that The Mars Volta are not terrible, usually. :(
Thank you for this useful contribution to the thread. Oh wait, that isn't useful at all. |

If you take away post rock, which isn't prog rock, then correctly categorize the rest of the bands as either some varient of alternative rock or neo-psychedelia, then all you have left is The Mars Volta, who are terrible.

Ohhh, c'mon ... you can not update this to say that "All Modern Music that is promoted by Microsoft and Apple ... SUKKs"
... we can at least be honest about it ... and you know what is worse and sadder still? ... no one says anything about it, like it's fine the way it is ... and some of these web sites are just cultivating the underbelly of mediocrity!
How exciting it is for many members here! Edited by moshkito - March 18 2011 at 20:40 |

I love hipster prog I love all sorts of hipstery things and C&C are pretty universaly hated by hipsters.... most "hipster prog" bands don't use "voice stablizers" or whatever... that is just blatently false.

MSN is corporate media. You will therefore find nothing outside of what is chosen for mass media in their articles.

Just typical commercial journalism ... using words that don't mean a whole lot of anything to most readers ... to make it look smarter and more intelligent. I can see it now ... Walter is going to read that because it says "neo-prog" in one of the sentences! ... yeah ...
Gosh ... we still in the "appearance" stage of things? ... thought that went out after the teenage days ... !!!
You know, it used to be that journalistic writing was 5th or 6th grade mentality ... I keep wondering what mentality it is when words are used to assume that the reader knows what it is and what it means ... and with the exception of a cut or two by most of those bands, they probably don't even fit the label they were "given".
Wonder if one day someone is going to call the bluff on those journalistic buffoons ... written by Microsoft a$hkissers that wouldn't know music from ... start me up ... just tells you that guillermo puertas is just a money ......................... (not even saying it!) Edited by moshkito - March 18 2011 at 13:01 |

Quite a weak article (although mostly good bands). No wonder why we're getting hilarious new proposals on weekly basis.

After you read the paragraph that serves as the intro there are 17 images you can view, each of a different band, with a paragraph or two written about them.
