A lot of albums tagged RIO/avant-garde are dispensable.
A lot of new prog is also dispensable.

I quite like it.   i try many listenings but finaly sold it back a few years later

The performances on Earthbound are really good it's just the poor audio quality that spoils it (from memory I think the master was a soundboard cassette recording i.e.like a decent boot.
i do think the sound was fripp choice, and that's the problem, how does sound 21st century on the first album? it's not recorded on a cassette machine,

Funny, i have always felt Nugent's Free For All and Scream Dream to be two different things altogether. The former is a pretty good album, while the latter is a terrible record-i would not say they are from the same period, really

Not yet mentioned are:

Octave by the Moody Blues. Absolute rubbish, although Steppin' In A Slide Zone isn't bad.
The More You Know by Jon Anderson. What the sh*t is that?!

OK. I am new to the forum. I didn't realize there were font size rules. LOL. My apologies to those extremely unsettled about some letters being a little bigger than yours. Sheesh.

I didn't explain myself too in depth because I didn't see the need to. It was meant to invoke some feedback. That's all. I LOVE early 70's kraut/prog/psych/RPI/space rock. And I really found those 2 albums to be total duds of the genre. My opinion. I know people idolize that Guru Guru album, but I just don't get it. It sounds exactly like another LP I have by a band called Missing Link. It's just not interesting krautrock. Can is better. The Birth Control album was a complete disappointment, since I first heard "Plastic People" and thought it was quite a masterpiece. But "Hoodoo Man" is NOTHING like the aforementioned good album. A total letdown and completely uninteresting to my ears.

Now Amon Duul II is another story. They are MASTERS! 100 times better than anything Guru Guru ever did. Everything Amon Duul II did from 1969-1974 is absolutely masterful!

I do not play nor write music in a classic prog/psych/kraut/space rock band, thus I don't see my name being etched in this musical history one responder spoke of. I would suggest that YOU get over YOURSELF.

As for bands that I DO like? I like Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso's early albums, "Darwin!" is a masterpiece of RPI. I've never heard the 1983 album "Banco" but after 1980 almost EVERY prog/psych/kraut/RPI/space rock band died out in their spirit, sound or performance. The ONLY exception I've discovered so far is Eloy who did release 3 good albums in the EARLY 80's. Everyone else pretty much turned to crap after 1980.
The 70's had so many great bands: Hawkwind, Minotaurus, 2066 & Then, My Solid Ground, Rush, Popol Vuh, Omega, Steve Hillage, Camel, Gong, Van Der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, P.F.M., Bubu, Dzyan, Necronomicon, Dies Irae, Cosmic Jokers, Tangerine Dream, Univers Zero, Dr. Z, Grobschnitt, Yes, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Scorpions, and the list goes on and on.

Some modern space/prog/RPI I highly recommend: Acid Mothers Temple, Seven That Spells, Oresund Space Collective, The Spacious Mind, Il Bacio Della Medusa, 35007, Astra, Birds And Buildings, Hypnos 69 & Vespero.

That's all. Thank you. :)

I have to commend you for this, as I can barely get through a single song without turning it off. I have no idea what it is that people see in Tool. And I don't think I have listened to any albums that I like 100 times.

For me, even early period AD 2 is inconsistent in quality-the debut is a masterpiece, but some later ones are a bit dissapointing. I love early Banco, especially Darwin!-what a masterpiece is right!

Oh, I disagree.   They have some fantastic stuff!  I love Boney M, and especially their side long "sci fi" pop epic 10,000 Light Years.

Excellent stuff.  Their version of Still I'm Sad brings tears to my eyes -- and oddly, I think they do one of the best versions of Motherless Child!

I also love PASHION PLAY!

I do agree though, about some generally bad albums...

Yes - Open Your Eyes (and then what?  What will I see?  Will I see an album that is so unlike anything I've ever associated with Yes?)
ELP - Love Beach (it just seemed like a beached whale...  The whole enterprise seemed to be straining)
King Crimson - Earthbound

Non-starter as a subject, surely. Everyone is just saying what they like or dislike, hardly objective criticism!

Tempting to drop the 'oxy'; but that would itself be petty. Just don't like this particular contradiction, it gives us a bad name, but I guess we'd get that whatever we proggies do or say, misunderstanding abounds.

Because what is terribly complicated, and maybe in a bad way, is tough to listen to. And what is tough to listen to becomes challenging...i.e. challenging music! *evil laughter*  One thing does get challenged in me when I listen to Tool...my concentration and attention span.

Maybe because it wasn't what I expected and I haven't heard it in a very long time but Music from the Body by Waters and Geesin.  I'll have to dig it out to see if my first impressions where correct

Tool are not too complicated. They're too annoying. It does not appeal to me because I disagree with just about every artistic choice they made throughout their career.
