Absolutely, and the naysayers with bands such as Collins led Genesis seem to forget this.

In 1973, just about the biggest artists on the planet were Led Zep, The Who, Yes (that's right, Yes), Deep Purple to name but four. They are rightly lauded and praised on this site. Popularity has never meant bad. To say so is merely the indication of a rather narrow mind.

I think popularity then was not a bad thing, but with the state of the music industry now, it is. A mainstream record company can completely destroy a good prog band, which is why specialised prog labels are important.

Don't get me wrong, I would love prog to be more popular, but it won't happen for a while I think, if ever.

Back in the early '80s, I hated the popular response to Asia. Dingy college girls would pass on by and be heard regaling on about how good the band was. That and their music was the reason I never truly warmed up to them. Their recent comeback tour meant absolutely nothing to me. The poster on the wall in the movie 40-Year-Old Virgin says it all.
