They were a stange band, dressed provacatively and strange and had a very weird single, Dont touch me there..... I remember all that. But not sure about a Prog genre for them. It was more a type of anarchist techno music, conceptual of course and very strange. But so many bands were doing that back then. Gimmicky rather than prog. Not sure here. Others?

Perhaps approaching crossover prog.
They are listed as: pop/rock, glam rock, rock, AOR, art rock and proto punk.
Rock, hard rock and new wave in this Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tubes
"What Do You Want From Live" is a cherished item in my collection.
To me, it's close to listening to a Frank Zappa concert.

"...and a baby's arm holding an apple."
I love "White Punks on Dope" and "What Do You Want From Life". But I've never considered them progressive.

A lot of the music in the samples sound really progressive, with instrumental quirkiness that remind me of Zappa and Gentle Giant. Good stuff. I've notified the Crossover Prog Team.

They had a fair amount of prog on their debt album. And a great album it was. After that, however theatrical they were, they were not prog. I would say no.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

The song She's A Beauty has always reminded me of Karn Evil 9 from ELP for some reason or another. Not sure why, but it might have had something to do with the music video and reference to a carnival.

Love this band. Plenty of prog moments ,even the more commercial stuff like Remote Control is still very interesting to my ears. This is The Tubes at their 'proggiest'

First album ,if listed here would be a near 5.
A classic and alot of proggy moments. Up From The Deep. Haloes Space Babies. Mondo Bondage Even the other tracks have proggy bits. A must have record. Still blows me away every time I crank it up on my Dynaudio monitors and subby. A one of a kind band. Live as tight as a drum. (from all the you tubes I've seen) Re Styles was smokin' hot also lol. |

Trying to spread the good prog to mud eared Aussies.

I play The Tubes on my radio show. Usually the earlier stuff, Remote Control and the track "Attack Of The Fifty Foot Woman".

![]() I was in the 3rd row of the gig in Leicester where Fee Waybill aka "Johnny Bugger" broke his leg falling off the stage brandishing a chain-saw. The documentary lies - he did not continue to run around with a broken leg terrifying the audience, he landed on the poor guy sitting in front of me and we were all sent sprawling across the floor by the impact. It didn't take long to realise that this wasn't part of the act when Waybill didn't get up, it took less than a minute for the band to stop playing so the roadies could carry him backstage. Also, several websites claim this happened at the Hammersmith Odean in 1978 during the recording of What Do You Want From Live (which was actually recorded in 1977), they lie too: it happened at Leicester's De Montfort Hall on 9th May '78. At the later Knebworth open-air concert in October '78 What Do Yo Want From Life ends with "...or a broken leg in Leicester?" instead of "...or a baby's arm holding an apple?" (I was there too). Anyway - The Tubes - damn fine musicians, Theatre Rock, Art Rock, but not Prog Rock. They could be Prog Related but I don't see the point in adding them.
