Yeah DTF is always nice. Freedom from the haters. Wink

That's too bad when we as music lovers, particularly of the prog form...have to go to another website/forum to not get "forum bashed" or feel unwelcomed, especially on this site. People should just read the post title and if it not interesting to them then do not enter it........but I am sure my post will get slammed also.CryCryCry

Well I was obviously pretty naive in thinking anyone who didn't care for DT would just not bother posting on the thread. But apparently the hate is just too strong LOL

You have to remember that the popularity of the band will automatically attract negative posts.   I usually don't comment on them because I haven't found much from them that grabs me.  That doesn't mean it is bad or certainly someone else doesn't love it.  I do like their side projects for the most part.  I must be a rare person as I have seen Portnoy play 3 times live (will be 4 in May) and none of them were with DT.  I try and stay away from the negative comments about any band.

When will they announce the new drummer? They've been, so far, very good at keeping it under wraps. Particularly in this Internet day and age, where news travels fast.
Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

Dream Theater got me into the wonderful sphere of prog... and for that I am grateful.

Although the new album is amazing they could put more songs from the old albums on the setlist for this tour. 6 songs from the new album is quite a lot. As a huuuge fan I'm obviously going to the show and it's definitely gonna be a masterpiece :)

Yeah, BC&SL is a great album, it's a shame they aren't playing any of the songs on the tour.

I am a fan of all of the DT albums. Yes, even Train Of Thought.

They are overblown, and pretentious, at times. But so is Glass Hammer, and I love them as well.

I hope they come out with a 12th studio album soon.

They were, earlier in the tour. But DT have been known to lighten up on a previous album's material the following tour. The problem with BC&SL is all the epics. You have two 10+ minute songs they can't really play due to the lyrical subjects, and 16 minute song they don't want to play because of a certain 'harsh vocal' section. That's over half the album. That only leaves the 2 shorter songs, which are objectively weaker songs, and the final epic, which they played over the summer, but they are trying to focus on the new album now.

I feel like Dramatic Turn of Events had some of their strongest songs since SfaM, and it almost seemed to me like the departure of Portnoy really took some of the gimmicky-metal from the sound. He's a great drummer with a mind for prog but he's seemed to be in somewhat of a midlife crisis for the last 10 years.

Anybody else think it was cool to see a song as good as "On the Backs of Angels" get a Grammy nod? :)

Really wish I could get past the vocals and enjoy DT, but I just can't.  Great playing but somehow, to my ears at least, emotionless music with little personality, other than Petrucci's guitar work.

I enjoy Kevin Moore's work with OSI far more since he left.

I thought it was really cool. I mean even though the Grammys are illegitimate, the fact that new people will come across the name Dream Theater because of it, is great. Sure they were the most talented most and deserving to win, but that's not reality. But it's cool that the mainstream world of music acknowledged them.

i grew to love JLB's voice.  the thing to keep in mind when listening to DT and LeBrie in particular is that there is nothing ironic about them at all.  they are serious dudes who work seriously hard on and for their art.  as we've seen with the yes debacle, taking care and using a lead singing voice is a talent in itself.

btw, still loving DToE.  so many awesome melodies.  i' haven't enjoyed an album like this in some time.  it is a bit on the loud compressed side, but i'm dealing with it.  i'm sure petrucci has written a bunch of stuff for the new album.  i really respect them for keeping Mangini in the band even when portnoy wanted back.  they're committed on their new direction.

Indeed, it may have sucked for Portnoy, but it would have been truly sensless towards Manginni to turn him down when he had already made plans for joining the band... I believe he had even already resigned his previous job, so they would really have screwed them up. Other people may actually have done that to him (like Squire perhaps...).
