I gave scientific references in my last post. Mike must be feverishly
looking for the counter-study... |

You talk about fear, mass paranoia. It's related to a vague, confuse concept of "global warming".
But have you ever heard about "air traffic excess" in the medias or anywhere else, expect the ridiculous Chemtrails theory? You will not, because there's too much money in game. Edited by oliverstoned - March 10 2011 at 09:35 |

Have a look at the book I linked to - it's full of studies. As to the one you posted: Extrapolating from such a short time span is hardly scientific.

I just Googled "air traffic excess" (without the quotes). This was the first result. Nothing else on the first page of the search results had anything to do with the problem you are describing. That said, you're really kind of demonstrating my point. Why don't you hear much in the media about how terrible recycling is? No, instead even our children's TV shows are loaded with indoctrinating programming. Environmentalism is drenched in hypocrisy, and it's main drive is not saving the world- it's building wealth. Find a problem and sell the solution is one way to make money. An easier way is to create a problem, convince people it's going to destroy them, then sell the solution. Speaking of aircraft, the TSA exists why? Because of fear. |

So it proves that the issue is not mediatized at all whereas we talk a lot about climate change.
You're true when saying that the system tries to exploit ecology. In the case of air traffic, there's nothing to exploit except air traffic itself, this is a huge lobby so that's why you'll not hear about that. What's frightening is that almost nobody notices the change in our skies... that's because people spend their time watching their stupid portable phone. ![]() |

I don't really understand- I live right next to Fort Bragg (which is home to the recently annexed Pope Air Force Base). From our backyard, we see parachutists jump almost everyday. Planes and helicopters are constantly flying around us. Around here, I have seen anything like the pictures you are showing. Why is that? |

To make changes first you need to acknowledge you have problems.

Since you all asked...I'll spout my opinions (I did earn this by listening to Coyote) 1. To deny the immense impact of human life on the environment is complete madness.
2. To think we can name it bad, good, or purple is pretty question
3. Because of #2, thinking we can "fix" our impact is pretty question too
4. Resource scarcity is obviously real. But when forced to adapt, we most likely will.
5. Even in the worst case scenario, the entire world ecosystem is unlikely to collapse. But lots of individual organisms are going to die. They already are.
6. The real consequence people don't want to deal with is that eventually Homo sapiens will be one of the species with alot of casualties.
7. People are already dying of hunger NOW.
8. If the environment's breaking point was going to be breached, it's probably already happened and we're screwed no matter what we do. More likely, the environment's breaking point is much harder to hit that we think, but we can make some impact through total culture changes. But those are small and incremental.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

It can be quite subtle. Here's a pic of a sunset in Fort Brag... The sun is a pale yellow at sunset whereas it used to be deep orange/red as it is now very white and dazzlig during the day whereas it used to be mellow and yellow. Fort Brag ![]() |

^ The color of a sunset can change from day to day ... there's such a thing called "fog", which is completely natural. There's also smog - which is simply air pollution and isn't really related to CO2 or steam.

I'm sorry, but that is not Fort Bragg, NC. I'm pretty sure the military doesn't have an ocean next to their barracks. ![]() According to "Danandloulou's" Travel Pod bio (from where this picture was taken), they have never been within 300 miles of North Carolina. They have, however, been to California's coast many, many times. So this is probably the sunset at Fort Bragg, California- 3,000 miles away from me. I have a good view of the sunset where I live. It is dramatically different from day to day. |

This whole thing with the disturbing images is a variation of a logical fallacy:
Counting the hits and ignoring the misses. In this case some disturbing images are presented and the conclusion is that these images are representative of the overall situation. Obviously that does not follow - you would first have to show that these images are not just cherry-picked to confirm the hypothesis. Edited by Mr ProgFreak - March 11 2011 at 08:23 |

Here's a thought: In the next few days I'll take some snapshots of the sky around Nuremberg airport - I drive by it twice a (work)day. I'll post them here - then we'll see if they look anything like the images you posted here.

Here's a panoramic view of the sky above Nuremberg airport. Everybody will find this pic normal, but actually the black band on the horizon is artificial:
