Topic: Progarchives Wedding Song recommendations Posted: March 06 2011 at 10:33 |
Hi,
I'm getting married this October and we are working on a songlist for background wedding music (pre-dinner & dinner) and I was wondering if you can give us some good ideas of songs by prog bands that would neatly fit on a wedding.
Our preferences are instrumental (but doesn't have to be), mellow, a positive feel, and avoidance of heavy drums or experimental avant garde (even if it's a tiny portion of the song).
Examples of what I mean: Il Sogno Di Leonardo (PFM) Islands (Instrumental Edit) from King Crimson Let it Grow (Renaissance) No Fear in Love (Iona)
Thanks!

We had Opeth's "In My Time of Need" as opening dance And later on some Porcupine Tree, Rush's "Subdivisions", "Free" from OSI, as long as it wasn't too mellow

Well, firstly many congratulations. I hope you are as happy as I have been
I'm not going to suggest an instrumental. I'm going to go for two yes songs, both of them wonderful love stories:
1. If Only You Knew 2. Turn Of The Century
You'll have her and them weak at the knees

Our first dance (song) was Jon Anderson's "Don't Forget (Nostalgia)" from Song of Seven. I'd have to dig up my list to see what other Prog we may have used. I'm sure there may have been some Peter Gabriel in there as well. We did our own music. We spent about three months building the set list, listening to it every Friday and Saturday night as we made our modifications. We allowed for a 20 minute interlude where we did the garter (to Yello's "Oh, Yea!"0 then back to the music, which we had recorded on a HiFi VHS. This allowed us to push play and forget about it (pre PC days). There wasn't a song played where someone wasn't up dancing and the music ended at exactly 1:05am. A great night was had by all. Just remember to keep Aunt Sally and Grampa Joe in mind as well. Like an good smorgasbord you want to have a little something for everyone.
Congratulations and all the best ahead!

Try Henry Cow's "Living in the Heart of the Beast". Your wife/fiancee will love it!

"You Have Your Own Special Way" and "Afterglow" from Genesis' Wind and Wuthering are both songs we used at our wedding, as well as "And You and I" from Yes, Tull's "Reason for Waiting", and "Are You Sitting Comfortably" and Have You Heard" from the Moody Blues On the Threshold of a Dream. In fact, the best man read the poem "The Dream" from that album as part of his toast:
When the white eagle of the North is flying overhead The browns, reds and golds of autumn lie in the gutter, dead. Remember then, that summer birds with wings of fire flaying Came to witness springs new hope, born of leaves decaying. Just as new life will come from death, love will come at leisure. Love of love, love of life and giving without measure Gives in return a wonderous yearn of a promise almost seen. Live hand-in-hand and together we'll stand on the threshold of a dream.
It was quite touching.
P.S. And congratulations, by the way!

Lazarus is a fantastic choice My wife fell in love with that the first time I played it.
Between us all, we could get quite a good prog wedding playlist going here

Congratulations! My top choice for a wedding song, one I'd like to play at mine someday, would be Genesis' "After the Ordeal". Beautiful song with a lot of dynamic and intrigue -- it sounds as if it could have been written for a medieval or Elizabethan ceremony (including marriage).

Not on PA, but Joe Satriani's "Made of Tears" I've always though was the best wedding song ever. And what IS on PA, Led Zeppelin's "Thank You" would work great.

Sorry, I'm not so sure about Turn of the Century; it's about the death of the lover of a sculptor (though it's a very beautiful song indeed). And you And I seems to have better suited lyrics... as far as they can be understood.

Thanks, I added 'if only you knew', 'and you and i', while there may be others in consideration.
I got fooled with the Henry Cow song, what the hell was that?
