In that case, simply use less water in the slow cooker, but be sure to do a quick soak of the beans. My wife grew up with Navy beans instead of Lima beans. Tonight, she had Lima beans and prefers them to Navy beans (thank God for that). We live on a very tight budget. Good thing I know how to bake and cook and stretch money. I can feed this entire family of four on $30 a month. And I make GOOD meals- not stuff no one would want to eat. And none of this "poor people eat fast food" bullsh*t. We've had fast food ONCE since we moved here in November 2010 (and it was Taco Bell!). We eat healthy food. My wife and I have lost a combination of 28 pounds since Nov 2010. |

Beans and rice are key (less than a dollar for a pound of any of it, almost). Pasta is also cheap. A bag of flour is around $2, so I bake all sorts of things with that, some milk, salt, and baking powder (if needed). For breakfast, I eat grits ($2 a bag, 61 servings = 0.032 cents a meal). Cornmeal is awesome too (for cornbread and other things). Meat is the trickier part of the plan. Chicken leg quarters are usually cheap (and for me, the tastiest part of the bird!). I will also buy a big pork roast, slow cook it with various vegetables, and eat on that all week. We even indulge in steak from time to time. Instead of sirloin, we buy flat iron. It tastes about the same as sirloin, but it's much cheaper because of a tough piece of tissue. Also, I don't care if I become a billionaire- I will eat Ramen. Love it, and always have. Plus, it's made in the USA! ![]() If, after the family is taken care of, there is money left, I get Milwuakee's Best or Busch Light, depending on what is cheaper (usually the former). I don't mind. Like with Ramen, even if I were a rich man, I'd still down the cheap stuff. Potatoes and onions are staples here (yes, I used to eat a whole onion for lunch). Some cheap dinners (that usually yield lunch the next day): Pinto beans + tortillas (homemade burritos for under $2) Pasta + sauce (spaghetti for $2.50) Cabbage (very cheap meal- yes, we will eat cabbage as a meal) Edited by Epignosis - February 28 2011 at 22:09 |

Reminds me of my childhood, only my parents were less inventive. We basically just ate potatoes.

Feed a family of four on 30$ a month. Amazing Robert. It makes me feel bad when I go eat outside and waste that in two (my gf and I).
That was a meaningful enough post to be the 22 k |

I hope some substantial amount of cash finds you at some point. You wouldn't want to be in the same house with me after I consumed enough cabbage to constitute a meal.

I usually drink cider, red wine or whisky.
Also has anyone heard Cynic's Re-Traced? Is it worth getting? Edited by Any Colour You Like - February 28 2011 at 23:08 |

I saw it at the record store today for only $12, so I may just pick it up during my next music binge.
