As most people reading this forum are aware, Dream Theater drummer and founding member Mike Portnoy announced his departure from the band in September 2010.  In October, Dream Theater held auditions for their new drummer to fill Portnoy's spot.  Since then there has been much speculation as to who that person will be, but so far the band has announced no name.

In an interview, LaBrie revealed that they auditioned 7 drummers (referenced here at the bottom: http://mog.com/blog_post/content/4312/2548346).

So, I was wondering if anyone has read or heard anything on which 7 drummers auditioned for the spot?

A press release was posted on Blabbermouth.net on December 28 saying that "Marco Minnemann is strongly rumored to have joined Dream Theater...."  Considering that blabbermouth appears to be owned by Roadrunner records, this seems pretty credible.

There is also a post in the PA forums here that mentions Mike Mangini as another top pick for the spot, though I don't know whether there are any sources out there that name him as one of the 7 who auditioned.

Even still, is there any word out there on who the other 5 were who auditioned?

PS:  Rumors are OK to post, but please use one of the other threads for personal opinions on who would be a good replacement for Portnoy.

Marco Minnemann was the drummer who was hired by Kreator for their 'hordes of chaos' tour recently.
That would be fine to have him with Dream Theater.

All I know is DT have chosen the new drummer (as announced in the latest Classic Rock) but haven't said who it is.

I think we will find out when it is announced Wink. I am more interested in the road they will travel without the input of Portnoy. If they take influence from LaBrie's recent album I will not be interested at all I don't think, Static Impulse does really nothing for me.

James LaBrie comments on Drummer Secrecy

The following was posted by James LaBrie on Twitter:

"Extenuating circumstances prevail with maintaining the
drummer's secrecy. Once revealed it will have been worth
the wait and understood. ;-)"

Ah good old Twitter! I can beleive that it will be worth the wait.

the same thing happened with Metallica's bassist when replaced by Pantera's bassist - it was worth the wait as he vamped the sound up considerably on Death Magnetic. I hope the same goes for Dream Theater as they remain one of my fave bands. Portnoys interview in CRPresents Prog is a revelation in the sense that he hopes they continue tho he is worried about being replaced. He is human and has feeling twards the brothers. He just needed a break as it was getting too much but the band wouldnt agree ot have a break from each other. For what its worth Portnoy can easily make it big without them as he is so well known and respected. Transatlantic is proof. The only think I have trouble with now is watching Portnoy carrying on in the DT DVDs as he is so into them and it all sounds surreal now, knowing he would soon be gone. I know things change and pple change but that was a drastic decision from Mike. And why didnt DT agree to have a break for the good of the band?

Mike reads the forums so if he is readng this I want to say - I hope he continues to make some of the best prog rock on the planet as he will always have my respect.

Mike Portnoy reads these forums?

On a related note to the thread, I don't understand the secrecy! Why can't they just get it out?!?!?!

Also, I'm getting fed up with checking the website 2/3 times a day waiting for an update (no lie). Pinch

It's really cool that I can go on the internet and see my opinions written for me, word-for-word. LOL

Agreed ... neither the growl nor its lyrics made any sense in the context of that song. Well, I guess it's indeed a good thing that they decided to go separate ways.Smile

No, we here were hoping he might be the drummer for the Wilson - Akerfeldt project Tongue

True, but if they ever wanted to play a song from the previous 25 years of DT history, Maitland wouldn't be able to play! Tongue

I sat in the front row last year and saw both Marco and Mike Mangini in Eddie Jobson's U-Z show in Whittier, Ca. I am telling you either of those guys could fill in nicely. They were the stars of that show by far.
