There isn't a local prog scene where I live, thankfully.

I live in Moncton, Canada, there isn't really any prog venues since the music scene is hovering around indie and pop (the biggest regular event is the "Indie Pop Night")
But we do have Les Paiens (http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4971), awesome band and awesome guys. Aside from them, there is DPS who only recently moved from their hometown Clare, NS to here because of the university. DPS is a death metal band primarily but I've had the chance to listen to all their new songs for their future album and there is now more technicality and progression in the music.

There is barely a music scene at all, where I live. Cover bands greatly outnumber original groups.... and all 3 of those are probably Indie......... The entire British music industry operates from London |

I wouldn't call it a prog scene per se, but there are a number of smaller prog bands in the area. Rap and hip-hop are far more prominent with musicians like Eminem and Kid Rock. The biggest two prog bands from my area are probably Tiles and Discipline. Other lesser known bands include Tin Scribble, Illusion, Space Nelson, and Eyestrings. They used to do an annual prog festival around town, before I knew about it, but it has been a number of years since that has happened.

All people are into here is indie rock, hip hop and metalcore. I'm fine with the indie rock, but hip hop and metalcore get old really fast. Definitely no prog scene where I'm from.

I have been told the scene in Glasgow is excellent. But I have very unsocial working hours so I am not able to check it out. Not that I am a social animal myself, preferring my own company (Read: a warm bed) after work. But Glasgow has something going for it. |

Hi,
Portland, OR is the worst place in the world for anything new and progressive.
And one of the things that makes it bad is that most clubs do not have enough of a sound system to make many of these bands sound and look better. The only bands that can sound good in Portland, are grundge, grundgier and old jazz!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Our town is famous for being where Alison Goldfrapp once lived - she's not Prog, but Felt Mountain has been known to appeal to people who like prog
It is also the home of my old mates, Season's End - goth metal gone prog. They are currently recording their next two albums, both of which will be Prog Metal. Only vids of them are old stuff, this is from 2005 (recorded, engineered and co-produced by yours' truely):
and there is this young wipper-snapper Accoustic Jazz Guitarist by the name of Daryl Kellie, not prog, but fans of Michael Hedges may appreciate this:
...and of course there's me, but my music isn't prog.

Theres one tech metal band here who have a few things going for them, pity being that they are a bunch of arrogant
![]() a prog scene is completely absent though it's all Bass Junky dance music. There was never a prog scene but there used to be a pretty major Metal scene which has now disappeared with major venues closing down and the ones that want to stay afloat turning into clubs, there is only 2 real live music venues left which only now host amateur bands playing various covers and the occasional touring tribute act. It seems to be the case reading this thread that 'prog scenes' just don't exist anymore and any prog bands around are big fish in very small ponds

As far as I know, not I single progressive band has originated in Newcastle (United Kingdom). There must be some, it's a fairly big city, but I don't know any.

Local? None. Zip. Lots of cruddy metal bands and faux-punk and some twelfth-generation ska. A lot of crap, really. I need to travel at least ninety minutes before I could identify a band that might fall under the prog banner.

In truth, aside from a couple big cities (New York, specifically) I don't think the USA has EVER had a prog scene to speak of. I'm sure in the 70's things were different in a few large cities, as I said, but even then I think it was mostly non-existent outside of them.

Wales has had some nice prog bands. The Reasoning are from South Wales, as are Karnataka. Budgie are a Welsh band, Geoff Downes hails from SE Wales.

Not so! The local band "Kick the Cat" channels Brand X! They may be on hiatus, but they are the best bunch of "amateurs" I've ever seen! "Grand Parade" are an amazing bunch, but they seem to be taking a break as well: "Chaometry" are a cool bunch, this site has some good samples: Best of all, Chicago is the home to Fareed Haque! He used to perform with Fareed Haque Group, which REALLY channelled Chick Corea's "Return to Forever," but lately he's either doing "Garaj Mahal" or solo gigs. You just have to have your ear on the local scene & know some of the musicians! New bands include my friends "Kites" and a few others. They are around, but it takes some searching.

Here's a review of Fareed Haques' newest project, Math Games, at the Chicago venue called Martyr's:
I met Brand X at Martyr's, and Adrian Belew, Tony Levin & others have played there. Also check out Schuba's Tavern for prog acts. We have a lot more of this in Chicago than many realize.
