Am I the only person who doesn't really like them very much? I prefer the pop-meets-bedlam approach to their self titled and the reckless experimentation of White Light/White Heat. Loaded and The Velvet Underground almost seem, I dunno, pandering. They've said they wanted to make it big but I just don't think they had the mental orientation for straight-ahead mainstream pop rock, as talented as they were. I'd as soon listen to Nick Drake or Sticky Fingers than anything from their last two albums. 

If anyone here is a big fan of those two, could you try to explain their appeal to me? I honestly can't figure out why they're regarded as classics.

The last two Velvet Underground albums are Loaded and Squeeze, FYI.

If you're referring to the self titled and loaded, and not the unfortunately attributed "squeeze," then I quite agree with you.

I dislike everything about Lou Reed except Metal Machine Music. John Cale made the Velvet Underground great and without him, they were nothing.

Their debut is a classic masterpiece of proto-prog. For this album alone they should be included in PA: they belonged to the inventors of prog. These songs were way ahead of their time (1966). Venus in Furs and All Tomorrow's Parties are high in my list.
White Light/White Heat is also interesting, but The Velvet Underground appeals more to my personal taste, in spite of John Cale's absence. With Loaded they fell into decline.
 
@thellama73: I think that the combination of Lou Reed and John Cale made them great, but John Cale's contribution was quintessential. I prefer John Cale above Lou Reed as well, but I guess you have never heard Berlin, or underappreciated it embarrassingly.
