PA calls it progressive.

New alternative rock is by far the thing I'm the most interested in, stuff like The Flaming Lips (they're not actually new but they lead this wave), Arcade Fire, Wild Beasts, Dirty Projectors, Phoenix, The Antlers, The XX, Mew, Kumm, The National, Modest Mouse, etc.

I do like what I've heard of Dirty Projectors and Mew.

Yeah, but I can agree with PA calling Radiohead progressive to some extent. Muse, on the other hand, not quite. Gladly it is on prog related.

What alt. rock do you like? You never mentioned any, I think.

Grungy stuff, Alice in Chains and the Stone Temple Pilots are far and away my favorites, but also stuff like the Foo Fighters, Filter, Helmet, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and select bits from Smashing Pumpkins' and Green Day's discography.

Now that you list them I think I remember you mentioning Alice In Chains and Foo Fighters. The discussions around here don't go in that direction often so that must be the explanation.

And it sucks, I might add.

You like Dream Theater, your opinions are invalid.

Dream Theater is more alternative than all multi-platinum "aternative" bands you mentioned (NMH excepted because it sucks harder, lulz).

Yeah, DT are so bad that they're actually interesting (in a way).

I only heard from them that EP they recently gave away. Is that representative? I didn't like it, and it didn't sound like alt.rock at all.

Not really.  It was missing all of their must-hear material.

Which stuff would that be? Like what artists in particular?

Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkings, Neutral Milk Hotel, Doves if I'm not wrong (basically late 90s early 00s music that you keep mentioning).

I'm not sure why I like them, Radiohead I found on this site. With Neutral Milk Hotel I saw an album cover that I thought looked neat so I bought the album. And with Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was for sale for like $5 at a CD store.

I actually listen to them more than I realize.

I see, it was more of a series of coincidences. If you want some recommendations in this area, let me know.

Well actually if you could give me a band that's a great blend over SP's emotional playing and NMH's folky-indie rock, I would love you Alex.

I was going to argue with you Caio, but DT's only Platinum releases are the live DVDs, lol. And Mellon Colie and the Infinite Sadness is 9x platinum! I'm fine with the idea of them as a "genre", but I dislike how alt-rock and indie are still seen as "alternative" when they are so incredibly popular.

It does not bother me that people like NHM. It bothers me that people think they're "weird". They're not.

Don't mention it, the new-wave revival keeps feeding me with repackaged 80s music, and I love it (despite how much I hated it before) LOL
