Which song is the Prog, in your opinion (and why)? I think that is not correct to put a song to exemplify the Prog, and considering all its facets and sub-genres. For me, in my correct view, Prog not have a single song that is trhe Prog. But if a song is the Prog, probably "Close To The Edge" is this song (or, better, the Prog composition). |

Interesting question. And there I find nothing wrong with making certain references. Also because in the 70's Atomic Rooster were what today we label as Extreme Prog Metal, and with all the appropriate distinctions! It must be said that certain bands of the 60's were Prog, because innovative for its time (but never will we dream today, to define Prog) and therefore could be used in this thread. Same case...: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Wishbone Ash, Roxy Music... The Beatles, The Zombies... Prog is not a easy musical world/ genre in its boundaries. Because also Prog Blues and Jazz Rock/ Fusion are Prog, for a correct post view! |

What prog is and what not is the topic of endless discussions, and it is very subjective.
That's why I also asked the forum with which 3 songs would you demonstrate prog rock? ![]() I asked for three songs, not one, because one would be really difficult, as you said yourself. I think it is impossible to cover everything on PA with one or three songs. It is simply the question, what means prog to you personally. Edited by Formentera Lady - January 18 2011 at 11:19 |

Frankly, I consider Prog everything band/ artist that has innovated Rock music. So for me it is Prog all the music that has changed Rock base. So Atomic Rooster for me is a Prog band because has invented Death Rock (also if in a proto form). It is true that a correct definition for Prog music is not possible because the boundaries of Prog was not totally clear and definable. |

The difficultly to choose a defining piece of music proves why prog shouldn't be treated as a genre. The word needs to be changed! So that the word progressive returns to it's original meaning, which describes anything that goes somewhere not before visited. At the moment it is limited to the 70's era, and anything since that sounds like those big bands (which, if you think about it, is far from progressive, but that's a different argument.....).

Actually I think that prog rock is a genre. And I would not say that prog rock is not definable. All I say is, that everyone of us has a different notion on and thus a different definition of prog rock. That is what the loads of endless threads about "how to define prog" show.
(I have not chimed in my definition, yet, because I did not want to involve myself in endless discussions to defend my position... no time! ![]() That's why I rather ask, which songs people consider as good examples for "prog". As for the original question: if I had only one song to choose as an example, it would be probably also CttE. |

If I had to pick one song to demonstrate to someone the power and beauty of prog rock, it would be "And You And I".

Prog IS a genre alright, but I don't think it should be. The word progressive just doesn't apply to all of it, and even if it did, it leaves out a lot of people as well: the progresisve people who aren't anything to do with rock.
I guess, in a way, the word "prog" has outgrown progressive to describe the things on this site without having any other meaning, but it is still an implication of foward-thinking-ness!
I am all for the appreciation of music with these inclinations, but I don't think there should be a category for it, as it's all so different. Call them substrates of rock, jazz, whatever.... symphonic, arty, pompous(!!), but progressive is too vague and unfair to other fields of music.
