First it was Mark Westworth and now John Jowitt leaves IQ.

As one of the finest bassists around he will be sadly missed.  The statement from his Facebook page reproduced below is brief and gives no detailed reason for his departure.  However JJ does say that he is looking for a new band.  IQ are also looking for a new bassist and he will be VERY hard to replace.  Whilst I wish JJ all the very best  as an IQ fan it's not the sort of thing I wanted to hear.

Thought I'd best share this sad news however...
Has left iQ.

This is my decision, and is not related to me playing with any other band.

I'd like to wish all the best to iQ, for what I'm sure will continue to be a great future; I'd like to thank the crew and past band members for all their help, camaraderie and hard work, and most of all, I'd like to thank everyone who's come along ...to the shows over the years and supported us.

Well, John Jowitt, or Jim Jowlett as he once was being called in Jadis LOL , is someone who will be missed enormously, isn't he? He was a very important member of IQ, and an important bass player of neo prog (look at the bands he played in). Not an easy person to replace, I'd say. Sad news for IQ fans.

Didn't they just announce their new keyboard player last week.  I wonder if he didn't like their choice.

IQ is becoming a revolving door of a band at the moment. Mike Holmes is the only constant present member throughout the years (hope I am not tempting fate saying thatShocked)

John Jowitt for me was a vital part of IQ sound...along with Mike Orford, more important perhaps than Mike Holmes

Definitely hard to replace..perhaps Tim Esau may come back?
yet you still have time!

Don't get me wrong, I'm upset about Jowitt's depature, but this is something of an absurd statement.

Mike Holmes has been the sole producer of everything since Ever. While all of their albums are largely collaborative efforts (with each member contributing their own respective parts), Mike Holmes is the one that brings it all together. His loss would definitely be more felt than anybody else's, as the songwriting and production would have to be entirely overhauled. If Mike Holmes left IQ, I'd probably give up the band entirely. Luckily that's probably not going to happen.

For me the band I came to know and love as IQ really began with Ever. Jowitt's addition and Mike Holmes taking over production brought them to a whole new level.

I'm not sure who they will or could get to replace Jowitt, but bringing back Tim Esau would be kind of a step backward. They should find someone who can contribute something unique and special, much like Jowitt did when he joined.

Apparently he'd been talking with a number of eager applicants, and when Durant was announced to be the new keyboardist this was something of a surprise to him. This probably contributed to his decision to leave, but I doubt it was the sole factor.

This really is bad news. So the show in Berlin last year was the last IQ-gig with Jowitt I'll have witnessed? Even more pleased that I've been there, then.

latest: tim esau is back indeed!

www.iq-hq.co.uk:

We are very happy indeed to announce the return to IQ of Tim Esau. As you will know, Tim was the original bassist with the band from 1981 to 1989 and we are thrilled to be able to welcome him back to the IQ family in time for our 30th anniversary year.

Here are some words from Tim himself:

"Well, I'll start by adding my best wishes to John for his future. I've only met him a couple of times myself but I know he is a great entertainer and was hugely popular with the IQ faithful.

So, following John's departure and having recovered from the initial shock of receiving a most unexpected email, I am extremely grateful to Pete, Mike and Cookie for thinking of me and inviting me back to play bass for IQ and I'm very happy to accept that invitation. I look forward very much to working with them again, meeting and working with Neil, seeing many faces that I haven't seen in many a year and, of course, meeting lots of new ones. I can't believe it's 30 years since I first joined IQ but I guess I've had a nice long rest so I'm ready to do some work and get on with the celebrating of this 'quite remarkable' anniversary.

"Rest assured we have no plans for further line-up changes in the near future! We look forward to seeing you all on this year's exciting IQ30 tour".

Huh. I wonder how Tim Esau will handle playing Jowitt's basslines. Many of them are more complicated than anything he ever played. And it seems like he's been out of practice for a while too.

Or are they just going to stick to playing pre-Ever stuff? It would be strange for them to ignore 18 years of their 30 year history. But I guess if that's what people want to hear...

He was always a competent bass player, so he will deal with it sufficiently, perhaps even making some rearrangement of his own... and also practising, of course.

Surely will be interesting. Arena recovered from losing Jowitt, but their basslines weren't half as demanding.

Different type of bass player Tim. My favourite peice of fretless bass playing is on The Wake (The Magic Roundabout) and one of the main reasons I became an IQ fan all those years ago. Probably Tim's best album is Are You Sitting Comfortably which although more 'pop/prog' then actual prog still has longish tracks and shows off his ability. John is certainly a much more powerfull player and helped beef up the IQ sound and so will be missed but thats life.
