Definitely check out Oceansize!  Fantastic 5 piece from Manchester and they seem to get somewhat little recognition compared to other prog bands.  Their sound has been changing over the years from their first couple of albums sounding 'alternative prog' (Effloresce, Everyone Into Position), then into their last two albums sounding less straightforward rock and slightly mellower, too, but not for the bad (Frames, Self Preserved While The Bodies Float Up).  They also have a couple of EP's that worth noting.  Music For Nurses came out just before EIP and has a similar sound to it and Effloresce, while Home & Minor is somewhat mellow and takes a much different direction from any of their albums and I would even say somewhat experimental.  Great band anyhow and definitely one of my new favorites!

Dropshard - Anywhere But Home

The debut album is released on Sonic Vista on February 15th. Comprising the Anywhere But Home suite plus bonus track Freedom Supermarket.

I have the promotional copy of this album and it is a major statement of intent with some fantastic compositional work. Although a concept album it veers between Riverside and maybe more traditional prog such as Genesis.

My own recommendation is England's  Garden Shed. Yes, Gentle Giant & early Genesis fans should love it but it stands on its own merits as a neglected masterpiece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5McZO7EXRHw

Gnidrolog. Older prog fans are probably familiar with them, but I discovered them only recently. I'm actually surprised they aren't mentioned here more often. I mean, I think Lady Lake has all the makings of a classic prog album, but it still took me several years to discover them. 

Anyone into Killola out here? Alternative rock..?

Lisa Rieffel - their vocalist is super hot! :P and super talented.. she has done sit coms like The King of Queens.. NO I DIDN't watch it.. but just heard about it.. lol

A third band I'd like to suggest is not prog, but they are prog related IMHO. It is Neurosis - http://www.neurosis.com/ They are from Oakland, California. They have a hardcore basis but they develpoed to much more than that. They started as Hardcore which can be heard on their first album - Pain Of Mind. WHat comes after this is much more complex, filled with rage and anger, power and more.

Funny how fate plays tricks with your head. I was listening to Neu! on Spotify when I read this post, and  had searched for the band without the exclamation point, so the word 'neu' was still in the search field. You know what, I just added 'rosis' to it and voila! 

Interesting stuff indeed. I am not such a big fan of metal, Sleepytime Gorilla and Mr. Bungle being the exception. But this stuff really has some potential, even if I am bit put off by the" Korn" sound...
