Steve Howe's solo in "Awaken" is the ultimate and most consistent adrenaline rush for me.

"Tufnel - Hellhole"

I love it! LOLHow appropriate! A solo from a (prog) rock parody makes a top ten!
Christopher Guest is a GENIUS!

Triumph's 1985 Stages double live album has one of my favorite guitar solo's. Rik Emmett does an extended solo at the end of Rock & roll Machine that still sticks with me. He does some jazz, classical, metal, blues, tapping, uses effects tastefully, showing how great of an all around player he was (is). It was a huge influence on my playing & in my youth it expanded my conception of what it means to play guitar tastefully.  I could name thousands more!

Results are subject to change....

Jimmy Page - Fool In the Rain (that octave/fuzz pedal is insane and incredibly emotional)

David Gilmour - Dogs (The entire song is a solo IMO)

Steve Howe - The Gates of Delirium (somewhere in the 10:30-11:00 mark when he follows the synth part, just gets me excited every time.)
It's funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen.

Could never pick a favorite. One random solo I really love:

On With The Action - Michael Schenker (UFO)
White Room (live) - Eric Clapton (Cream)
Veteran Of The Psychic Wars (live) - Buck Dharma (Blue Oyster Cult)
The Hero & The Madman - Eric Bell (ThinLizzy)

These are fantastic too.
I know, a lot of heavy rock, but the most of prog rock guitar solos have already been mentioned.

Jimmy always does excellent work in his pal's albums ... and the one to get along with Stormcock is ... Jugula +4 ... which is superlative.

You guys gonna hate me for this ... but here goes ... and you gotta say ... screw it ... to the "progressive" moniker because it is stupid!

James Gurley - w/ Janis Joplin - "Ball and Chain" - and one of the best rock albums ever that all of you should have. "Cheap Thrills" ... it taught Jimmy Page, David Gilmour and half the English scene how to play a loud guitar, not to mention what became known as "metal".

Randy California - Spirit - The first two cuts in the side 2 of the Dr. Sardonicus album ... "Space Boogie" and "When I Touch You" ... so some of these metal kids can learn how to do metal and where it came from!

Garry Moore - Grinding Stone - The song named "Spirit" has a 10 minute guitar solo that is insane and probalby one of those that blows out veins in your head for intensity and listening ... I am not sure that prog heads can even sit through this one at all ... this is not a "mental exercise" in doing a lead, or a solo ... this is a purebred solo and a powerful one at that.

John Weinzierl - Amon Duul 2 - Yeti. There is no more metallic and "raw" sound, than the guitar in this long piece ... to me, it is like ... the aliens have come and they are landing and then they are taking their steps around us ... it's absolutely incredible and strong and awesome.

Michael Karoli - Soon Over Babbalooma, Side 2 ... the two long songs go together, but the transition from the first song and INTO the 2nd one (Quantum Physics) is a masterpiece and also an incredible touch and slight hits by the drummer. Absolutely perfect "touch" and music design and one of the most beautiful things ever done in rock music!

Manuel Gottsching - In Blue - With Klaus Schulze. Most guitarists can only play rock and roll. Some have no fear and will just play along ... and help create something that rock musicians do not have the guts to try ... a rock raga ... with the best keyboard man for it, too. This is excellent stuff, but not sure many here can live with it, when they are just asking Frank Zappa to play his guitar! This is music .. not rock!

Terje Rypdal - w/ David Darling - Eos album - Adagieto. The album that I have been trying to get all the prog wannabees to listen to .. this is Chamber music at its best with an electric guitar and Terje not only complements Jimi Hendrix, it does him justice and better ... absolutely astounding and so beautiful ... that I seriously doubt that most "prog heads" here have the guts to listen to it. It's not anything ... but fanulous musicianship creating a feeling that is simply ... sacred!

The rest ... for th emost part ... is just rock music ... and there isn't enough of it to be worth the mention in my book!

David Gilmour on Dogs is brilliant indeed.

I really like Steve Rothery's solos as well. The one on Easter may be my favorite overall.

Hi,

One really sad thing in this whole list ... we only listen to "pop music" ... and this list is probably 75% stuff that was on radio and made it big ... which is really sad ... I guess there are no guitarists that have solo'd playing jazz ... or some other kind of music.

Guys and gals ... we're not sounding, looking, or showing how progressive we are ... !!!

C'mon ... shoot it for a run ... show your knowledge, not just your memories!

Why does everything have to be progressive in your definition of the word?

Roman Bunka's (who???) solo in the "Blues" part of "Heartbeat" from his album "Dein Kopf ist ein schlafendes Auto". his solo in "Lost Scooters" from the live album of Aera is also great. my favorite guitsr player; he deserves a lot more atention.
at the end of this video is a live version of "Heartbeat"; that solo ain't bad either, but the one on the studio album just blows my mind every time I hear it:

This piece may not be prog, but it's certainly on the same level of quality as any prog I've ever heard:

^Proof that Eddie Van Halen can do more than just tap.  Actually kind of reminds of David Gilmour a bit.

Allan Holdsworth on The Things You See (when you haven't got your gun) and Frank Zappa on Sleep Dirt

Bonus Track: Tim Smith on To Go Off and Things from All that Glitters is a Mares Nest... yes, I do consider that 5 seconds rant as an awesome guitar solo.

Every solo of Francisco Neto, from Lands End.
He has the capacity to keep invisible and let only the music in the air.

Also Jhon Petrucci has made some very impressive solos, but to me not so deep as Francisco Neto did.

PS sorry for the poor english
