Triumph's 1985 Stages double live album has one of my favorite guitar solo's. Rik Emmett does an extended solo at the end of Rock & roll Machine that still sticks with me. He does some jazz, classical, metal, blues, tapping, uses effects tastefully, showing how great of an all around player he was (is). It was a huge influence on my playing & in my youth it expanded my conception of what it means to play guitar tastefully. I could name thousands more!

James Gurley - w/ Janis Joplin - "Ball and Chain" - and one of the best rock albums ever that all of you should have. "Cheap Thrills" ... it taught Jimmy Page, David Gilmour and half the English scene how to play a loud guitar, not to mention what became known as "metal".

Randy California - Spirit - The first two cuts in the side 2 of the Dr. Sardonicus album ... "Space Boogie" and "When I Touch You" ... so some of these metal kids can learn how to do metal and where it came from!

Garry Moore - Grinding Stone - The song named "Spirit" has a 10 minute guitar solo that is insane and probalby one of those that blows out veins in your head for intensity and listening ... I am not sure that prog heads can even sit through this one at all ... this is not a "mental exercise" in doing a lead, or a solo ... this is a purebred solo and a powerful one at that.

John Weinzierl - Amon Duul 2 - Yeti. There is no more metallic and "raw" sound, than the guitar in this long piece ... to me, it is like ... the aliens have come and they are landing and then they are taking their steps around us ... it's absolutely incredible and strong and awesome.

Michael Karoli - Soon Over Babbalooma, Side 2 ... the two long songs go together, but the transition from the first song and INTO the 2nd one (Quantum Physics) is a masterpiece and also an incredible touch and slight hits by the drummer. Absolutely perfect "touch" and music design and one of the most beautiful things ever done in rock music!

Manuel Gottsching - In Blue - With Klaus Schulze. Most guitarists can only play rock and roll. Some have no fear and will just play along ... and help create something that rock musicians do not have the guts to try ... a rock raga ... with the best keyboard man for it, too. This is excellent stuff, but not sure many here can live with it, when they are just asking Frank Zappa to play his guitar! This is music .. not rock!

Terje Rypdal - w/ David Darling - Eos album - Adagieto. The album that I have been trying to get all the prog wannabees to listen to .. this is Chamber music at its best with an electric guitar and Terje not only complements Jimi Hendrix, it does him justice and better ... absolutely astounding and so beautiful ... that I seriously doubt that most "prog heads" here have the guts to listen to it. It's not anything ... but fanulous musicianship creating a feeling that is simply ... sacred!

The rest ... for th emost part ... is just rock music ... and there isn't enough of it to be worth the mention in my book!

Every solo of Francisco Neto, from Lands End.

He has the capacity to keep invisible and let only the music in the air.

Also Jhon Petrucci has made some very impressive solos, but to me not so deep as Francisco Neto did.
