I really enjoyed Greek/Roman Mythology when I studied it in junior high school. It seemed to make more sense to me in describing why things were what they were. Different gods for different departments of life made more sense than just 1 almighty God.

That's interesting, does it mean that if other religions had strong traditions you would acknowledge that their gods might exist? I thought you'll go for the easy answer and say that God (the one in which you believe) said pretty clear that there are no other gods, so you can't believe otherwise.

See, to me, Christianity would be much better without the God part. Surely there must be Christians who don't believe in God?

That would be quite a contradiction. But there are plenty of people who have their own belief in the Christian God without considering themselves Christians (and outside of religion in general).

I mean, they can still believe in the myth (oops) of Jesus and even believe in God but they realise the idea of God is just a concept, rather than real. Much like the Jedi Order.  The majority of people (the sane ones) know the Jedi Order is just a concept from Star Wars and probably jump on the bandwagon just to be anti-God or as a joke. Yet I'm sure there are also genuine members of the Jedi Order who would say it does really exist.

Actually, nope, I am only on Kaipa. I got the two new Weezer albums for Christmas, so I was sidetracked and started listening to their other albums before I listen to the new ones.

Interesting. I wasn't sure what you'd say. I was more intrigued whether you don't think they exist because the idea of pantheistic Gods/Goddesses is a silly notion. I was actually hoping you'd say yes, actually. They're called "myths", so I was hoping you'd fall into my Heffalump trap so I could then call your Monotheist God a Myth as well. Damn it!
But Rob, just because they don't have all those prophecies and metanarrative, it doesn't make the idea of Pantheism any less valid (to me anyway, if I did believe in a monotheistic God). It was from an earlier age too. Many Nordic people do actually believe in Woden, by the way.

We in the West get hung up on "existence or non-existence," but most of the ancient world didn't operate that way at all. Henotheism was quite common- the idea that many gods exist but only one is supreme.
We try to be so systematic in our discussions that it gets silly- let's say a tribesman in Africa believes in the existence of many gods, but receives the teachings of a Christian missionary, repents of his sins, and wants Christ to be the leader of his life- does this tribesman have to now stop believing in the existence of other gods? I think a lot of modern day churches would say yes, but that clearly isn't the case biblically (see Paul's preaching in Acts 17).

I'm actually interested in the history of Agnosticism and Atheism. I'm sure there were many about even as far back as the 1st Century A.D. but they probably couldn't speak-out. It's much more accepted now and people aren't afraid now of saying what they do and don't believe in.
Does anyone know when the first written evidence of Agnosticism/Atheism was?
