I don't know if anyone else here follows Fripp;s diary. I still check it on a semi-anuual basis. Checked it the other day and noticed this somewhat upsetting bit. An email to Bill Bruford: "… three performances done, final at 19.00. consensus seems to be increasing in power. this lunchtime was very powerful for me. next performance is my final performance as a professional musician, as we would conventionally understand the term. focus moves to writing & instruction, with most likely very very few performances. perhaps churches & even the WFC, which is now something of a sacred space." Basically he says he's done with traditional recording and touring, to focus on teaching guitar craft and I guess the occasional church performance with the the Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists. It's highly possible that this means the most recent North American tour will have been the last tour for King Crimson. Unless of course he allows Adrian Belew and co. to continue with his blessing. It's a little strange that no official announcement has been made, only this random diary entry that most people won't see. So what does everyone think of this? Is this the end for King Crimson? I would sure hope not. I've never had the chance to see them. It has to happen sometime I guess, but it is strange that there wasn't an announcement.

So why am I to continue if I'll never see King Crimson. Another one of my dreams we're just **** upon.

This sort of attitude is probably the reason they're keeping this a pseudo secret. I think most of DGM's customer base is people who feel like by supporting DGM and buying the bootlegs and solo albums and whathaveyou, they're also supporting the possibility of a future King Crimson album/tour. This is why the fate of KC has been in limbo for so many years. This is probably why they haven't made a big official statement. Despite Fripp constantly telling people to have "no expectations" and seeming apathetic about KC in general, DGM continues to dangle the carrot in front of his fans as long as it remains profitable. So when he decides he's done with the whole thing he just offhandely mentions it in a diary entry. I'm a big fan of Fripp's work. I've got no problem whatsoever with him wanting to scale back his workload in preparation for retirement. He's provided us with so much great music over the last 40 years, he's certainly earned it. It's just strange and slightly dishonest that they'd be so quiet about it. And it's even stranger that more people haven't taken notice. Edited by Harry Hood - December 24 2010 at 23:48 |

He's been saying he's not interested in rock and KC for a long time now (I've subscribed to his diary more than two years ago, I think). Wasn't the last KC tour almost a decade ago? I wouldn't call that recent...
I think it's a wise decision, and if he comes up with something new, musically, I'm sure he'll perform again (in the traditional sense of the word). |

^ Nice, lucky Americans. And I should suppose there is a direct connection between that American tour and Fripp's subsequent lack of interest in rock and KC?

Remember, Fripp makes these insinuatingly apocalyptic pronouncements on occasion (1974; 1984). I believe him, however, regarding the reformation when KC material comes into being (something like "when there is music only KC can play, they will do so"). A bit open-ended, but then, why should he hurry? It's not his style.

Hi,
That one doesn't get me a lot ... but this one does ....
"There are many professional guitarists who, today, can do what I can only aspire to; this in both their playing & professional capacity. Most are also much younger. Performances in churches & places outside the field mediated by commerce; areas free of the expectations, anticipations & assumptions of the pro musician; and those that might be characterized as acts of worship, in a wide sense; these all continue to attract my attention. Which probably explains why I don’t feel that anything has finished here at the WFC. "
... and this is something that I keep writing about all the time ... that because of all the commercial stuff out there it is getting very difficult for people like him to be able to live their inner dream and do the work that they wish to do ... and the biggest problem we have here, is that we consider KC progressive and Robert on his own albums is so experimental and out there that ... we ignore him totally ... and as he says ... what would be characterized as his own act of worship, is probably treated here as ... garbage, and meaningless ... because it doesn't have any "progressive" ideas or descriptions, or time breaks or .... whatever.
It's the biggest hint that most music is not what we think it is ... and that the thing we call "progressive" is much more to do with that inner spirit ... that it has to do with anything else that we think ... and I'm not sure that we're capable, or willing ... to even consider that option!
There are many others that fall into that path ... including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Stomu Yamash'ta, Vangelis, Klaus Schulze ... but sadly, they will never get the credit for their intuitive work ... because it is not progressive!
So ... in the end, the commercial directions are the ones dictating the popular tastes ... and we suck it up ... and really ... it is about time we stop thinking that all this rock/pop stuff is called "progressive" or "prog" ... when it is nothing but a copy of the same thing that has been done before millions of times.
You decide if you want to be a part of a machine, or an original! Edited by moshkito - December 27 2010 at 16:35 |

Harry ... give it a rest ... Robert has never been into the fan/fame thing and is simply not interested in the type of comments and work that you are demanding off him.
He already gives in enough to fans and has done a couple of KC tours, but these are obviously too exhausting and not something that a man in his 60's has enough energy to put together and give everyone their favorites and top ten hits that KC had.
If you don't like his solo work and his own words for his own internal journey ... and appreciate the music that comes out of it ... it's time for you to get weened off KC. Just accept it ... and it's over ... there's other music out there for the fan in you!
