No, I meant David Gilmour's s/t. As for Roger, his solo albums are more of an evolution from Floyd's final era (71-79) with a humoungous blues-rock influence. The Mutantes' first album is nothing like the rest of their discography. They are pretty eclectic actually! Their first album was part of a pioneering cultural movement here in Brazil called Tropicália, but starting with their next album, released in 69, they changed to psychedelic / progressive rock, a style they kept untill Rita Lee left the group in 72 (I think). From 72 untill they broke up they were a progressive rock band, with mild Yes and Deep Purple (the latter only in the late 70's) influences. If you would like to take a listen, listen to their 69 album, Mutantes, as well as their more "progressive" albums O A e o Z and Tudo foi feito pelo Sol. |

Thanks Caio. Also, Tropicalia sounds awesome as a name for a cultural movement.

Yes, indeed. If you can, take a peak @ the portuguese article about it. The english & spanish ones aren't very informative about it. |

True. I actually find it amusing that people actually look at good eyes at the 80's music, excepting the ressurecting metal scene, when the 70's music scene was so rich and powerful. Most of the legendary BR artists of today recorded their best and strongest albums during the 70's/late 60's, as is the case with Caetano, for example. |

I don't find it amusing, but perfectly understandable. Current tastes are rooted in 80s alternative (post-punk, new wave, etc.), to which the 70s classic rock is the complete opposite. No wonder there isn't much of a 70s revival except for the prog-scene (which isn't much of a revival because the patient is IMO quite dead). I can agree there is a small brand of contemporary art-rock that borrows a lot from 70s art rock like Queen, Floyd, Bowie (I'm thinking of Muse, PT, dredg, Pineapple Thief, Demians, byron). But even if one the bands I mentioned is highly popular I still think they're a niche. I think that the 60s revival that is happening (to an extent) is much more promising for fans of the classic rock sound, because 60s psych sound is much more akin to the alternative sound. And there is The Mars Volta, who are mixing 60s influences (Santana, Hendrix, The Who, Floyd) with 70s influences (KC, Can, VdGG, prog-fusion, funk) with hardcore in a completely unique recipe that I don't even know how to relate them to the above ideas ![]() |

There's a lot of current bands that are rooted in 70s rock, no?
Airbourne, Year Long Disaster, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Them Crooked Vulture... |
