Topic: Zeuhl vs. Krautrock Posted: November 28 2010 at 11:18 |
Which of these sub-genres do you prefer? My vote goes to Zeuhl by an enormous margin.

Zeuhl gives me one of my top three greatest favourites (Magma), but I think that Krautrock as a genre is stronger and more important.

Same, except a couple of my top 5 instead of one of my top three (Magma, Ruins).

I prefer Krautrock, even though I can't say any of the sub-genres are favourites. Both could be considered to be difficult and idiosyncratic sub-genres, but Krautrock has a wider spectrum of sounds, often a hypnotizing and addictive grooviness to it, as well as that lovely exploring and curious outlook on music and sound (more so than other prog, I'd say). The fact that it's charmingly playful at times is an extra bonus.

Haven't heard a lot of bands of either both sub genres, but judging from what I have heard, my vote goes to Krautrock

I personally like ALOT of Krautrock artists, and only like...one Zeuhl artist. Thats just me, of course, but I think Krautrock is much groovier and easier for me to get into.

Well, I need to listen to more from both genres, but I'll have to go with Zeuhl. I don't think I understand Krautrock entirely. I've heard quite a lot I like for Can and Neu, etc. But a lot of it just seems to meander meaninglessly...
I really like Magma, Ruins, and that Japanese one whose name I really can't be bothered to commit to memory... Kiliabajaqwath or something :D.

too close to call, Zeuhl has Magma, but there are lots of Krautrock artists I appreciate, not sure I can separate my vote for this one.

Apart from a few albums by Magma my knowledge of both is extremely minimal. So far.
I'm equally interested in both, no vote.

I agree with many comments above: zeuhl was extremely interesting experimental genre when it was invented by Magma, and during decades it influenced few more good bands. Krautrock was huge musical genre in early 70-s with very different trends and directions then and later. Krautrock importance is much higher

Krautrock is probably of more importance, but personally I feel far more attracted to Zeuhl.

How can I compare 1 band (with a couple of followers) to a movement with hundreds of bands, all with their own distinct style?
A poll of Magma against Can might have me think for a second... and the I'd still go with the Can.
