I do know a decent amount about classic prog, too. I don't dislike the genre but I don't listen to it too often.
Although I am a huge fan of Yes.

Maybe you've been listening to the wrong kind of metal. There's some excellent avant-metal stuff out there, and a lot of post-stuff has drone/noise influences.
Given the stuff you've listed up there, Kayo Dot (all of their styles) would be right up your alley.

I'm actually constantly amazed by the breadth of knowledge of the genre by some of our younger members. a lot of them can put us oldies to shame!

Well I'm 18, and I've been listening to a good deal of non-prog-metal stuff over the past few months (branching out into the jazz fusion, RIO/Avant, Eclectic, and Crossover genres so far), with plans to explore more, I'm always going to be more of a metalhead than anything else. I just get irked when I say this and then I get written off as being juvenile or having poor taste.

I didn't take it this way. I took it as older proggers don't like prog metal as much as younger ones do. But this should not be stereotyped.

I'm 16 and I think it's sad that a lot of people on here think that we only enjoy Prog because of Prog metal. I enjoy Prog Metal of course, but I am intrigued and surprised far more frequently by classic prog and recently jazz fusion. I have yet to understand Zeuhl, but I'm sure it will come :)
It's a shame that for some reason people think that Prog is reserved for those who were around at the time, a lot more than any other genre. I refrain from saying that prog has the most genre 'snobs' but they can be very hostile towards us because we don't 'understand' the genre, when, in fact, they should be encouraging more and more people to get into it ... no matter what age.
Sorry for the rant

I'm going to be 14 in just over a week, and yes, prog metal got me into prog, but I listen to more rock than metal, not because I like it more but because there is more rock than metal out there, so therefore it is easier to get, and therefore I have more of it, and therefore I listen to it more

I'm 14. Yes... it's true... Anyway , I only like the classic stuff. Yes, Floyd, Genesis, Zeppelin, and Rush are my favorite. Occasionally I enter the realm of Dream Theater or Animals as Leaders. But yeah, I don't like most of the Modern Prog Metal. And I don't like any alternative rock, pop, hip hop, rap sh*t.
Damn, I sound like one of those kids on Youtube that says, "I'm a 12 and I don't like rap". or, "I'm a fetus and I don't like hip hop".
I'm sorry. I've failed you all. :(

I am 18, and I love many types of prog. I'm in a prog band in the archives in fact and everyone else is younger than 18.
